[edit] History

The first game of this series was a release title for the Playstation console in Japan on December 16, 1994. The series differed from other RPG games of the time in that it was played with a fully 3D, first-person camera perspective. Even though King's Field games feature minimal interaction with NPCs, the series gained a very high popularity with its uniquely perfect adventuring feel and well-planned, fantastic areas.

To commemorate the 20th anniverary of King's Field, From Software has released the special "Dark Side Box" package, containing all four King's Field games, as well as a music CD, a map of Verdite, and other bonuses.

[edit] Games

[edit] King's Field

In the original game, you play as John Alfred Forrester who is searching for his missing father, Hauser Forrester, who disappeared along with his soldiers while exploring a dead king's underground graveyard. Shorter than the others in the series, and released only in Japan, King's Field includes just five floors. The main aspects of gameplay consist of first-person battles, puzzle solving and exploration. Fans have written a full English translation patch.

[edit] King's Field 2

After the success of the first King's Field in Japan, King's Field II became the first in the series to be released in the U.S. (under the name 'Kings Field'). In this sequel, we play the role of Alexander, the lone survivor of a shipwreck who at the behest of King Alfred tries to fulfill his duty to find and retrieve a mysterious sword from the dangerous island of Melanat.

This time around, the game has a much more ‘open’ feel than the first since a large portion takes place above ground, but the main aspects of gameplay remain unchanged: first-person battles, puzzle solving and exploration.

[edit] King's Field 3

In King’s Field III (released in the U.S. as King’s Field II), you play the role of Prince Lyle Austin Forrester (son of King Alfred) as he struggles to uncover the reasons behind his father’s sudden descent into madness and to restore peace to the suffering kingdom of Verdite.

Overall gameplay remained very similar to the other King’s Field games and entails first-person battles, puzzle solving and exploration. This installment is the most sprawling of the first three and has a significant number of tweaks which streamline controls and gameplay compared to the first two games in the series.

[edit] King's Field 4

(King's Field: The Ancient City in U.S.) With this game, series released on a new console: PS2. The entire game takes place within the Land of Disaster where an evil once struck and the forest folk once dwelled. The character takes the role of Prince Devian of the Azalin Empire who has been given the task of returning the Idol of Sorrow back to the cursed land. His journey follows the downfall of the Kingdom of Heladin and the failed attempt to return the idol by Septiego the Sword Master who led an expedition of over 1000 men with this very task.

[edit] Kings Field: Additional I

First game of the series that released for PSP console. The "Additional" series uses a step-by-step dungeon crawling style of gameplay, rather than free-roaming. Not released in U.S. However, the game itself came with a mini-instruction manual in both English and Chinese for import buyers.

[edit] Kings Field: Additional II

Sequel to Additional 1. Not released in U.S. This game featured the ability to bring your character from Kings Field: Additional I into the Kings Field: Additional II Universe. This included all equipment and level ups.

[edit] Common Items

King's Field has many items which are found through almost every incarnation of the title. Below are some of the more common items.

  • Herb - Restores a small amount of HP to the hero character.
  • Antidote - Removes the condition 'Poison' from the hero character and heals a small amount of HP.
  • Moonlight Sword - Also known as the "Holy Sword", the Moonlight sword was created by the dragon Guyra (a.k.a. the Forest Dragon) to tempt powerful warriors into his service with hopes of finding a champion strong enough to help him be reborn. The sword was then given to the Forrester family by Guyra in ancient times and was handed down to John Alfred Forrester. In the US, through poor story cohesion management, a King's Field 2 (US) guide erroneously stated that the Moonlight sword was created by Vallad as a means of destroying Guyra and Seath and given to King Alfred by Vallad himself. This story is not supported by the King’s Field games and conflicts with many game facts and plot points.
