Kinallen is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland, sitting four miles from Dromore and only two miles from Dromara. It lies in the north-eastern corner of the Banbridge District Council area. The village surrounds a crossroads, where the Banbridge-Dromara and Lisburn-Katesbridge roads meet. There is little in the way of amenities, with one shop and filling station. In recent years, the village has seen substantial development, from only 300 residents in 1991 to 557 residents in 2001. This is due to rising property prices in areas closer to Belfast, Kinallen's attractive rural position and its proximity to the A1 dual carriageway.

[edit] Education

  • Fair Hill Primary School (formerly Kinallen Primary School)

The local secondary school students often attend Friends' School or Wallace High in Lisburn, Banbridge Academy or Dromore High School. With the provision of a direct bus (Translink (Ulsterbus) service 26), a few choose schools in Belfast, such as the Royal Belfast Academical Institution.

[edit] Transport and Communications

The rural B-class roads add an extra 10-15 minutes to the journey time from Belfast via Ballykeel Crossroads.

The village is linked by Translink-Ulsterbus bus service 26, which runs between Dromara village and the Europa Bus Centre in Belfast via Kinallen, Annahilt and Lisburn.

Kinallen's official telephone dialling code, like the rest of Northern Ireland is 028. Kinallen lies within the Dromara telephone exchange area, meaning local numbers commence with 9753xxxx. Until the 2000 Big Number Change, the village constituted part of the 01238 area code (Saintfield/Ballynahinch/Dromara). Like elsewhere in the former 01238 area (now 028 97...) is still normal to hear local numbers quoted in the old 6-digit format (53xxxx).
