There was never such thing as the kingdom of the Algarve. This is just misleading.--BBird (talk) 15:01, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Actually, the Kingdom of Algarves existed, but not as an usual kingdom. For example the kings of Portugal styled themselves "King of Portugal and Algarves". The status of Algarve was very tricky, as it was part of the Kingdom of Portugal in almost all ways but separated from it as indicated by heraldic and title principles, taxation and religion-based differences of those days. Note that when king Afonso V conquered Arzila and Tanger in 1471 he changed the title to "King of Portugal and the ALGARVES, ON THIS AND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA IN AFRICA" (i.e. Algarve on the Iberian Peninsula and in Africa): the Portuguese possessions on Morocco were called the overseas Algarve, surely because of religion reasons. But it was very very unusual status. Any expert or someone with good sources to clear that?Câmara (talk) 11:45, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
