The main runway of the Bermuda International Airport, looking South-Eastward from Ferry Reach. The house in the foreground was built by Vincent Astor. The airport was built during the Second World War as a joint US Army/Royal Air Force base. Built by the US Army, it was originally known as Fort Bell. The RAF withdrew after the War. in 1948, following the separation of the US Army Air Forces from the US Army to form the US Air Force, the base was re-named AFB Kindley Field. It was turned over to the US Navy in 1970, who renamed it USNAS Bermuda, although it continues to be known popularly as Kindley Field. The Bermuda Government operated a Civil Air Terminal from the former RAF side of the airfield. After the closure of the US bases in Bermuda in 1995, the Bermuda Government took over complete operation and renamed the fieal Bermuda International Airport.
