I am 99% sure that the source website [1] you mentioned is not the original owner of the picture. When we say "provide the source" we ultimately mean to "mention who owns the copyright". For example, if a celebrity fansite has scanned a photo of celebrity XYZ from i-weekly or copy-and-paste from celebrity XYZ's blog, the fansite does not have the copyright to celebrity XYZ's photo. If anyone takes the photo from the fansite and upload it here it is a copyright infringement even if they mention "taken from <fansite URL>".

Now back to the photo you uploaded (and which I deleted). I am quite sure that is not Yvonne's official website so the site owner is in violation of copyright. The site owner probably took it from elsewhere. Your best way to get a photo of Yvonne that is usable on Wikipedia is to contact her (she probably has a email address for fans to send greetings) and ask her politely. Tell her she needs to give you a photo with the following terms of usage (copyright terms):

  1. Anyone can distribute the photo.
  2. Anyone can modify the photo.
  3. Anyone can distribute their modified versions of the photo.
  4. “Anyone” in 1-3 refers to commercial and non-commercial people, i.e, companies as well as home users.

These four conditions are quite strict, but they are needed because Wikipedia accepts only photos whose usage terms are compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License (license text), which is the copyright of all Wikipedia articles. (Of course, if you tell her the photo's going to be used in a Wikipedia article about her she might be a bit more willing to give in to these terms.)

I managed to get a few GFDL photos from Xiaxue a few months ago, if you email me I can give you a changed version of the message I sent to Xiaxue asking for free-licensed photos. Good thing you asked... it shows you've understood what I'm saying so far. :-D

(What I will say below is basically a simplified version of the instructions at WP:COPYREQ.)

In the email you send, please make sure to tell Yvonne the URL of the photo you want her to release under a free license. I forgot to tell you this in my email but this is also important.

When you get a reply from Yvonne, forward both the message you sent her, and her reply, to "permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org". Or better still, forward them to me (just use my email address directly - no need to use Wikipedia's "email user" anymore) and I'll do the sending to permissions-en for you - WP:COPYREQ seems to add a lot of complex steps to send the message properly... :-S

When it gets to permissions-en they have a storage system for this type of thing so it won't get lost. As for really confirming that the real Yvonne gave her permission - we basically assume your good faith in the entire process. Pegasus «C¦T» 14:24, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
