[edit] Plot
This is the first episode of CSI seen from the killer's perspective. The viewer follows Karl "Red" Cooper, an ex convict, that once released from prison (after doing seven years for robbery), goes looking for the member of his team that rat him out. He murders him without overviewing any details that would connect him to the crime, the only problem is that when leaving the scene a young drunk woman crashes into him with her car. When she starts dialing 911 he is forced to murder her so as no to appear in any police record of that area.
The CSI's start investigating the murder of the woman, finding themselves absolutely clueless as to why she was murdered. Meanwhile Cooper is shown at his home, being afraid of being caught and feeling guilty for having killed the girl, specially since he has a daughter of his own.
Grissom finds the dead girl's cell phone, she had dialed three numbers, which Grissom discovered being in fact three letters of a license plate. He also finds out that the girl has been expertly strangled. Sara traces some paint scraping found in the girls car, to a blue Ford. This leads take them to a car salesman that admits having sold that car, and remembering the buyer since he had come by bus and paid in cash. Sara does a timeline and finds the bus driver of that hour, who remembers having picked up from the middle of the desert a bearded man. Nick, Greg and Sara go to the bus stop origin of the mystery beard man and find semi burned clothes and wheel traces.
Some days afterwards, Cooper's first victim is found, Catherine and Warrick investigate without thinking that the murder of a poor man, in a dodgy apartment, would be related to the one of the young rich girl. Eventually the evidence leads them to discover that they are indeed searching for the same man.
In his house, Cooper contacts his lawyer and starts getting ready to volt with his family somewhere else, getting together fake IDs and credit cards, his wife finds out and when he confesses everything she tells him to leave her.
The CSI's get closer to the killer when finding trades of an all-terrain vehicle that lead them to compare evidence and to identify Cooper as the murderer. When arriving at his house, they found evidence that confirms it, but Cooper had already flee. Jim Brass then threatens Mrs.Cooper to take her daughter to child services, right then Cooper calls her and acknowledges the situation deciding, for the sake of his family, to turn himself in.
When confessing to Grissom he asks "So tell me. Where did I go wrong?" "You killed two people" is Grissom's succinct reply.
