Kilinochchi

Killinochchi (Sinhala: කිලිනොච්චිය Tamil:கிளிநொச்சி) is a small city in the Kilinochchi district on northern province of Sri Lanka. Killinochchi is situated at the A9 road some 100 km south-east of Jaffna. Presently this city is the administration center of the LTTE.

Present day Killinochhi was known as "Giranikke"[citation needed] in ancient Lanka. First century CE stone pillars, and ruins of the Buddhist "Lumbini" vihara are found here. The site is listed in the reports of the archeological commissioner[1]. The Kilinochchi is 100 Km south of the once flourishing Nallur city off the coast of the Jaffna Lagoon.

Most people living in Kilinochchi are Sri Lankan Tamils.

Kilinochchi is one of the major agrarian cultivation destinations in the island from the pre-historic times. Iranamadu (Ranamaduva) Tank, Kanakampikai Kulam (Pond), and Kilinochchi Kulam are the major irrigation source for paddy and various other cultivations.

Kilnochchi has a defunct station on the Sri Lanka Government Railway system.
