Kier Group plc is a business active in building and civil engineering as well as mining and property development. It is a constituent of the FTSE 250 index.

The company was founded by Olaf Kier, a Danish engineer, in the 1920's[1]. In 1973 J L Kier, as it became known, merged with W C French, another contractor, to form French Kier Holdings[2] and in 1986 French Kier was acquired by Beazer PLC[3]. In 1991 Hanson bought Beazer PLC[4] and immediately decided to dispose of its contracting business. The contracting business was the subject of a management buy-out from Hanson in 1992[5] and became listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1996.

The company has five divisions: Construction, Support Services, Residential, Property and Project Investments[6].

Projects involving the Company have included the Lesotho Highlands Water Project completed in 1998[7], Hairmyres Hospital completed in 2001[8] and Snowhill, in Birmingham, which is still under construction[9].
