[edit] History
The mine began operation in 1966, producing copper, zinc, and other base metals.[citation needed]
[edit] Geology
The Kidd deposit is one of the largest and richest volcanogenic massive sulfide ore deposits in the world.[citation needed]
[edit] Current Operation
Kidd Creek has three shafts known as the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 mines. Mine D (or D Shaft) was completed in 2006 to access reserves below the 6,800 foot level. This will extend the life of the mine to at least 2013, and will make it the deepest base metal orebody being mined in the world. The resources to be accessed are estimated at 24.4 million tonnes of 2.90% copper, 5.77% zinc, 0.25% lead and 75 grams per tonne silver.[citation needed]
