The Kia Soul was originally unveiled as a concept car during the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Kia has announced it would produce the Soul in late 2008 as a 2009 model. As a mini MPV (ala the Scion xB), it will slot between the Rio and Spectra.

The vehicle was designed at Kia's design center in California. The Soul will be produced in South Korea primarily for the U.S. market. It may also be sold in Korea and Europe.

First spyshots of the car appeared on the November 18, 2007.

The production Soul will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show this September.
