Khorunzhiy (Хорунжий in Russian, chorąży in Polish; derives from the Polish word choragiew, or banner), was initially the name for a standard bearer, which would later become a junior officer rank in the Cossack army of the Russian military. It corresponded to the rank of second lieutenant (подпоручик, or podporuchik) of infantry or cornet of cavalry.
