[edit] About me

Wikipedia unconditional member fan and evangelist since 2004-03-13, I am also an open source software enthusiast, now living in Casablanca Morocco after nearly 20 years living in France (Limoges, Bordeaux and Paris). I have studied Computer science at the university of Bordeaux and then got a Master of science degree at the university of Paris VII, but I am also interested by many of other subjects.

[edit] Why Wikipedia is so great

Sorry this section needs some refactoring

Two words : Synergy and Serendipity. Synergy, because the sum of all articles is far bigger than adding articles values to each other, Wikipedia allow you to find in the same place an enormous quantity of information, this information is also connected to other relevant information, so this place it in a context. Serendipity because while looking for an information you often discover new things which allow you to broaden your knowledge.

I often see Wikipedia as a big city, you always tend to take the same routes and avenues and go to the same places, still ignoring big parts of the city because of you own culture and interests; but from time to time, there is this nice thing called Serendipity which can be defined as finding something unexpected and useful while searching for something else entirely. This often happens when you read someone's home page, then you discover his edits, this leads to a wholly new universe, you discover new quarters of the city, completely new places which broaden your horizons.

I am also fascinated by the ongoing process of Wikipedia as a huge and totaly new Epistemologic experiment, something completly new is happening here. I will try to write about it someday, some work has already been presented during the Wikimedia conference. (too lazy ton find the article :))

Of course Wikipedia is not perfect, it probably contains many inaccuracies, but one need to view it as an entering point to new domains and concepts and for this nothing I know of comes near. While you can probably find elsewhere in the Web everything you find here, Wikipedia's big plus is the Synergy it creates by putting all this information right in the same place while adding interconnection between entries as a (big) bonus. Hence the meaning of a topic is not only inside the topic itself but also in the way it is connected to other topics.

During my studies one of the most interesting fields I have been exposed to, was the Sociology of scientific knowledge and Science and technology studies mainly the Actor-network theory. This has been a really fascinating and life changing experience for me. This discipline explains the social construction of every human knowledge and the importance of the sociological interaction processes in the creation of every field even the scientific ones. It also stress the importance of notability fashion and buzz in this process. One can see this process in the making everyday in Wikipedia.

Because of this my main concern is seeing marginal content creeping into Wikipedia as this will muddy the hole WP content and image, and give visibility and credibility to marginal theories and beliefs. I firmly believe that WP is NOT a promotional place, be it for corporate information, political views, religious beliefs ideologies etc. I believe that the main criterion for inclusion into WP is notability not veracity as this is the best way to criticise contested information and warn gullible people by bringing cricism and warnings. Nevertheless I think that notability is hard to establish, how can for example a US and Vanuatu politician be compared ?

Of course I also strongly belief in asserting NPOV in every article, but I tend to believe that it is rather achieved by exposing all the point of vue rather than a unique and superior point of view, as WP is not a place to bring consensus among people but to share different opinions about different subjects.

Wikipedia has also proved to be a great place to meet bright, intelligent and interesting people. It's also a great way to meet specialised people, its the best Social network ever. If you think you are such a kind of person ;) just drop me a mail or leave a message in my talk page, I am always interested in meeting extraordinary people, don't you ? :).

Picture of the day
United States Capitol dome, 1846

A daguerreotype of the United States Capitol in 1846, with the original green copper dome as designed by Charles Bulfinch. Over time, extensions to both the north and south wings, made to accommodate the addition of new states to the Union, made the dome aesthetically displeasing, and as a result, it was replaced by a white cast iron dome which was completed in 1866.
