Khatra (Bengali: খাত্রা) is a sub-division of Bankura District.[1] The Kangsabati Project for irrigation is located in this sub-division. Kangsabati dam has an important role for farmers of the districts of Bankura and Paschim Medinipur. Khatra is on the south-west part of Bankura. Pioneer "Bratachari" Guruji Gurusadaya Datta is popular here.

The Khatra sub-division has a 40 per cent below poverty line population and till 2006 it did not have a subdivisional hospital. [2] Non-availablility of water held up inauguration of the hospital premises. [3] The subdivisional hospital was inaugurated by Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Chief Minister, on 18 November 2006. [4]

Khatra is part of Ranibandh constituency (No. 246). In 2006 state assmembly elections, Deblina Hembram of CPI (M) won the seat. [5] Maoists are active in the Ranibandh area. [6] Mukutmanipur is about 12 km from Khatra. Golden Jubilee of the Kangsabati movement was celebrated at Khatra on 30 and 31 August 2006. [7]
