[edit] History

Khanewal has a rich and vibrant history which can be traced back to the early 1900's.it is a well known disst. in Pakistan for the cotton growing industryand for the feudal lords. The Daha family along with the Arrains, Fogartys, Kombohs, Sials khokhars and Khaggas are regarded as the first settlers and founders of Khanewal.

Historically Khanewal is an old city with its earliest foundations being laid by the British owing to its importance as a railway junctionand its straight roads are showing that it is a planned town by the britishers. The earliest settlers are said to be the Dahas, who have the 'Khan' in their names and the city was named after them as Khan-e-wal. Khanewal was made into a District in 1985 constituting the two tehsils of Khanewal district namely Kabirwala and Mian Channu. Its boundaries meet the districts of Jhang and Toba Tek Singh on the North, Sahiwal on the East, Vehari on the South and Multan on the West. Khanewal District is spread over an area of 4,349 square Kilometres and comprises the tehsils of:

[edit] Industry and Agriculture

Khanewal is an agricultural city and is located in Pakistan's 'Cotton belt' - an area covering Khanewal, Multan and Bahawalnagar. It is known to produce the finest cotton in the World. However over the last 40 to 50 years industry has also been established in and around the city. Sir William Roberts established cotton trading and ginning installations in the area known as Brooke Bond which is now called Unilever, a company that specialises in making tea. There are over 900 workers employed by Unilever. The people of Khanewal are hard working and mostly committed to agricultural activities which is the main source of income for the people of the district. Other industries in Khanewal include chemical production and oil extraction. This has added to Khanewal's economy, growth and prosperity.

[edit] Climate and Soil Conditions

The Khanewal District has a very extreme climate i.e. Fifty-two degrees celsius in summer, with temperatures falling to bellow zero in winter. The land around Khanewal is very fertile. A diversity of crops are grown, mainly cotton, wheat and rice, and like the Multan district, Khanewal is also famous for its mango orchards. However, some portions of Khanewal consist of sand dunes where crops can not be grown. The river Chenab flows on its north and the river Ravi on its North East side. Small areas of tehsil Kabirwala are flooded during the monsoon season. The average rainfall in the district is 93 mm. Khanewal and its surrounding agricultural land is irrigated by both canal water and tube-wells. Spring, Winter and Autumn are the best times of the year to visit Khanewal which has several picnic spots situated around it.

Khanewal also has some other colonial landmarks dating back from the early 20th century, all private properties, but truly historic.
