[edit] Cast
Nic Marais has anchored the show since January 2002.[3] The show is co-hosted by part-time comedienne Mel Jones[4]. The team also includes Wesley Peterson (traffic and sport), Darren "Whackhead" Simpson (prank calls), Stephen Werner (executive producer) and Deon Bing (surf).
The show has successfully turned several regular callers into on-air characters, most notably Survivor Jean, Dingo Dave and filmwurm Johan van der Walt.
Ian Bredenkamp, the show's highly-respected Executive Producer from 2002, moved into a management position at 94.5 Kfm in September 2007.
Lance Witten, the show's producer in 2007 and early 2008, left Kfm Breakfast to join E.tv's 24-hour news channel.
Nic Marais announced his resignation on 5 May 2008 and will broadcast his final show on 27 June 2008.[5]
[edit] Daily features
The show is well-known for its daily features:
- Random Acts of Kindness, surprising unsuspecting listeners by paying their bills, handing out free merchandise or concert tickets. The station set aside the 2007 winter solstice as its first annual Random Acts of Kindness Day. Listeners were invited to donate to homeless shelters in preparation for the upcoming winter months. Over 50,000 kilogram of tinned food were collected.[6]
- Power Breakfast, daily tips from mind-and-body advisors Dr John Demartini, Suze Orman and Patrick Holford.
- GK Elite, where call-in contestants go head-to-head, given 60 seconds each to answer as many general knowledge questions as possible. A monthly leaderboard charts the daily contestants' success, and the months' winners face each other in a R200,000 (±US$30,000) showdown at the end of the season. The 2007 winner, announced on 7 November, was Reddam House teacher Bridget Bertram.
- Prank calls by Darren Wackhead Simpson, saved as daily podcasts on the station's website.
[edit] Celebrity Wednesday
One of the show's longest-running features is the weekly Celebrity Wednesday interview, where guests join the team for relaxed and unscripted interviews. Guests interviewed include former South African state presidents and Nobel Laureates Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Deepak Chopra, international sports legends Francois Pienaar, Lucas Radebe, Jake White, Tour de France winners Jan Ullrich and Greg LeMond, Gary Player, Corne Krige, Graeme Smith and Bob Skinstad, actors Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Swayze and Charlize Theron, authors Jackie Collins and Wilbur Smith, and hundreds of others.
