[edit] Kevin Durant's height is over 6'10 in shoes--the measurement that will be displayed on all official NBA literature

Those who list '6'9 fail to understand the protocol when listing NBA height measurements (basketball is played in shoes and the ONLY reason players' height are even listed is because of the sport they play--a sport played IN SHOES); and as such, wikipedia will eventually be the only source on the web that still lists Durant's height at 6'9 (because some stubborn douchebags want to play editing games).

[edit] So you're going to change Durant's height every time he changes his shoes?

Maybe at least wait until he signs his first shoe contract. After all, look at Spencer Hawes; he gains 2.25 inches in shoes. If Durant wears those he will be over 6'11".

[edit] Shoes

Could someone clarify what make and model of shoes Durant was wearing in Orlando. Thanks.

[edit] Shoe Contract

Durant recently signed a contract with Nike so I'm assuming that he will be using Nike shoes...

[edit] Thanks

Now we just need to know the thickness of the soles on the model he will be wearing during games.

[edit] No, I'm going to list his height as it's measured at the NBA's official pre-draft camp: 6'10 in shoes

Not all NBA players are listed at their height in shoes for example Vince Carter measured 6'5 1/2 barefoot and that was rounded up to his NBA listing, Shaq is 7'1 barefoot aswell, Richard Jefferson measured 6'7 1/4 barefoot and is listed at 6'7 and Shane Battier was measured at 6'8 1/4 barefoot and is listed at 6'8 RandyRhoadsRonnieDio

Also espn lists Durant at 6'9! http://sports-ak.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=31579 RandyRhoadsRonnieDio

  • NBA.com lists him at 6'10. Can we agree to list his height on his official NBA profile page (whenever that's put up) ?Corpx 18:54, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Actually, other pages on NBA.com lists him at 6'9. I think his height on his official profile page at NBA.com should be the one listed here. Corpx 18:56, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I would ask the following question; As an encyclopedic source, should wikipedia report a listed height without qualifying whether it is in shoes?

As an example;the WWE regularly lists heights which are often inflated, should an encyclopedia report the listed height or an actual height. I made a change to 6'9" with the addendum that KD is typically listed at 6'10." This apparently was not good enough. I noted when I made the change that the NBA asks the players what height to list, it is not automatically the shoes height. There are a few very notable inflations (let alone shoes vs. barefoot) heights in the NBA. Charles Barkley was routinely listed at 6'6" though he was 6'4." Allen Iverson gets 6' even though most players who have commented think he's more like 5'10." I just think it is silly to list someone's height in shoes in an encylopedia. The NBA is a product, a business, and can do what it likes as far as reporting heights. When it comes down to it, Kevin Durant is 6'9," if he wants to play in platform shoes he can be 7'0," so do we then change his height to 7'? No. Or if he decides to go old school and wear some converse all stars, is he then 6'9.5" instead. Why bother with all these variables?

He is 6'9" as god/nature/universe/parent's DNA made him. That being said, I'm leaving it up to someone else who agrees to change the heights. Whorchatasoto 07:00, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

  • You're not going to get height measurements without shoes post the draft-camps, so after that it is the listed height. The draft-camp measured height is accurate, but what's to prove that Durant hasnt grown and inch or two past the date of the measurement? In regards to this, I think we should go with the height listed on an athlete's official profile page @ NBA.com (Durant's not yet up, as he's not drafted) Corpx 07:05, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • You can say Barkley is 6'4 and AI is 5'10, but what solid reference proves something like this? Corpx 07:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Sonics roster lists him at 6'9, so unless anyone has any newer measurement, it should stay at 6'9. Corpx 04:42, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Can we please stop editing his stats to something other than what the roster says? Corpx 06:22, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The same is true for the Greg Oden page.

Does anybody here really think he will be listed at 6'11 anywhere? What the hell is the point of doing that? He's measured at 7'0 in shoes, and that's what he'll be listed as, except on wikipedia, doh!

[edit] For whatever reason, Oden's difference in only one inch

How is a fan blog considered a source? Anyone can put up a blog calling a player anything and that doesnt establish it as a nickname. Corpx 18:03, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Nm, found a better source. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/grant_wahl/02/12/freshman0219/ Corpx 18:06, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Birthdate/Birthplace

Someone changed the birthdate/birthplace to Sept. 29 1988, Washington DC (rather than Sept. 30 1988, Suitland MD). Majority of references I found seem to state the latter so I changed it back and added two references that looked most likely to be authentic (although TexasSports.Com has the former dates just to confuse things) - tried searching for official birth records but couldn't find anything. Zarius 20:46, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Kevin Durant was really born on September 29, 1988 in Washington, D.C. and not on September 30, 1988 in Suitland, Maryland. My information is according to TexasSports.com, the official athletic website of the Texas Longhorns. Zarius, who is a Wikipedia editor insists that Durant was born on September 30, 1988 in Suitland Maryland. Zarius is a pathetic dumbass that dosent know what he is talking about so don't believe anything that he writes. Zarius in a disgrace to Wikipedia and should be banned from editing any pages on it because he's a retard with false information. - Details moved from article page (10:32, 9 March 2007), originally posted by AdMan763.
Please note that I have only changed the birthdate once - I reverted an unsourced change by 72.95.244.138 (06:19, 4 March 2007 - note the previous 5 edits on the same day). I researched the subject first and added references to back up my findings - majority of pages I had found stated Sept 30 and I referenced two pages just to make sure, then added details to the discussion page. After dispute I now have left the current birthdate and birthplace as they are, cleaned up the reference to TexasSports.com and left an invisible comment to see the talk page. [edit] Rating

I rated this for the college basketball project. I gave it a B, but definitely apply for GA or higher status! Wrad 23:28, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Position

Durant isn't just a forward he is listed as a guard/forward on almost every site. You have to be kidding me Durant plays more guard than power forward.

[edit] How much guard

did he actually play in college?

Enough to be listed as a guard/forward by espn RandyRhoadsRonnieDio

  • He stayed on the perimeter a lot and took a bunch of 3s in college. I think his positions should reflect what's said on his team's site. Texassports.com lists him as G/F, so I think it should stay till his NBA team has a profile up. Corpx 19:00, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
In the first paragraph of this article, which is about him being selected in the draft by the Sonics, he is labeled as a forward, which is what he played more of in college, too, so I'll change his position to just forward. Miles Blues 05:29, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I read in Sporting News recently that he might line up at the 2 guard for Seattle this year... but we should probably wait until the season to put guard in the article. Miles Blues 16:51, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Trivia

I vote to remove this section. I dont see the importane of stating that Durant & Oden share a middle name. Corpx 02:01, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA comments

I know that Durant is a young guy, but for a person who was the #2 pick, there surely must be a lot more info out there on the guy. In Australia, Andrew Bogut was the #1 pick and it was on the news all the time even though nobody in Australia cares much about basketball.

  • #2 draft. I guess it must have been the subject of a lot of talk. What did his team say? Why did they pick him, what skills does he bring to the teams which make him so higly rated?
  • We have no information on his style of play, except for his playing position. Needs major revamp to discuss and analyse expert opiinions of him. What about his temperament and so forth?
  • How did he transfer from high school to uni? Did he get a scholarship at UoT. What were their motives in selecting him? What did they say about him. What course did he enrol in at university?
  • How did his team go? Match-winning performances?
  • Style and so forth is ok. Since it was relatively short, I did copyediting and so forth.
  • SOme of the refs are not fully filled in. some only have a url. Also with YouTube, it is not considered to be a RS but I cannot open the video to see what is in it. What does it tell us?
  • Video game pic should be removed. We know that his face was used for a videogame cover. The image does not tell us much more than that and it if unnecessary FU.

In general, the biggest problem is that this article is very skinny. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:37, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

I have failed the article mainly due to the lack of content, expecially given the amount available in the sources cited which were not fully utilised. Also with the webreferences, please also add the date of publiciation as well as the access date. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:40, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Aargh, that sucks. We'll keep adding more content Corpx 07:42, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 2008 Rookie of the Year?

I have removed the mention of Durant being named 2008 T-Mobile Rookie of the Year. There was no sources included, further search of Google News showed not one article of Kevin winning this award. Yearsago (talk) 14:10, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
