Kevin Stalheim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kevin Stalheim is founder and Artistic Director of Present Music, a Milwaukee-based new music ensemble committed to commissioning new work and supporting residencies. Born in Milwaukee, Stalheim's interest in music began when he took up the trumpet in the sixth grade. After graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio, he returned to Milwaukee to found Present Music--an internationally acclaimed new music ensemble--because, as he reflected in a 2003 interview, he "had a love of music" and "was bored."

Through Stalheim’s considerable efforts, Present Music, established in 1982 and now in its 27th year, is regarded as one of the foremost national organizations in the development and presentation of new music. Stalheim's dedication has brought Present Music to the forefront of new music in the United States. The ensemble commissions, records, tours, and participates in an educational program in schools and community centers.

Among his accolades and honors are the City of Milwaukee Arts Board’s 2002 “Artist of the Year” award, the Civic Music Association’s 2001 “Distinguished Citizen Award” and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s nod as 1989 “Musician of the Year.”
