[edit] From Non-League to Premiership
Ellison began playing non-league football for Southport for whom he made 2+2 appearances in the 1996/7 season. He then moved on to Chorley before joining Welsh Premier League side Conwy United where he spent the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons, making a total of 31+6 league appearances, scoring seven times. In the summer of 1999 he joined Altrincham for £2000. His performances at Altrincham soon attracted attention and he trialled with Manchester City, playing for their reserves in March 2000. In February 2001, following two trial periods, he signed for then Premiership side Leicester City, the fee reported to be £50,000. His only Premiership appearance for the Foxes was as a late substitute against Manchester United at Old Trafford in March 2001.
[edit] Joining, Leaving and Rejoining Chester
Ellison was released to Stockport County and then moved on to Chester City in August 2004. An outstanding five month spell with the Blues brought a hatful of spectacular goals and a move to Hull City for £100,000 in January 2005. Previously he had enjoyed a successful loan spell with Lincoln City but opted to stay in the north-west by joining Chester.
In the 2006/07 close season Ellison and teammate Robbie Stockdale both made the move from Hull to Tranmere Rovers, with Tranmere beating off competition from clubs such as Scunthorpe United, Bristol City and former club Chester for Ellison's signature on a two-year deal. Ellison was a regular during his debut season, making over 30 league appearances and scoring 4 goals. After two failed attempts, Chester finally made a successful bid for Ellison in June 2007 and he returned to the club for an undisclosed fee, reportedly the club's record signing [1].
His first league game back at Chester was a goalless draw with Chesterfield on August 11, 2007. A week later he revived his tremendous rapport with Chester fans by scoring a last-minute winner at Rochdale.
On February 2, 2008 Stockport County announced they had struck a deal to bring Ellison back to Edgeley Park on loan in a move to be made permanent in the summer of 2008. As of February 8, 2008 Ellison has rejected a move to Edgeley Park stating his love for Chester as the reason behind it.
