Kevin Deery (born December 06, 1984 in Derry,[1] Northern Ireland) is an Irish footballer who currently plays in midfield with League of Ireland club Derry City F.C..
[edit] Career
Deery began his career with Derry and District League team Trojans and due to his outstanding ability he quickly caught the eye of Derry City scouts, who convinced their club to sign the player in 2001.
Although he suffered ligament damage in the 2005 pre-season and again during his comeback,[2] in 2006, Deery has been involved with a successful Derry team, including a UEFA Cup run. He scored two long range goals in the 5-1 away defeat of Gretna F.C. helping to ensure Derrys progress into the first round proper.[3]
He has been capped at under-19 and under-21 level. He made his debut for the Republic of Ireland U21s at Tolka Park in October 2005 against Switzerland.[4] He played against Greece in Athens when the Republic of Ireland U21s opened their tournament with a 2-0 victory.[5] He has also earned his first call up for the Republic of Ireland B team.
After performing throughout the 2006 season, Deery won the 2006 PFAI eircom League Young Player of the Year award along with TV3's Goal of the Season award for a long-range lob scored against Shelbourne FC in September 2006. In late November 2006 Deery had been linked with clubs such as Wolves and Dunfermline, after both Mick McCarthy and Stephen Kenny expressed interest but he remained a Derry-player for the 2007 season. On 04 February, 2007, Deery was awarded the eircom International Football Awards' European Club Goal of the Season prize for his second goal scored against Gretna F.C. during his club's 2006 UEFA Cup Second Qualification Round game.[6]
