The Idukki Dam is built on the Periyar River, over the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in the southern Indian state of Kerala. At 167.68 meters, it is the highest arch dam in India. A hydro-electric power project, the dam was constructed in 1969 with the cooperation of the Canadian Government. The dam has been generating power since 4 October 1975, and provides electricity for use in parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Periyar River, one of the few perennial rivers in the state, is also the longest, with a length of 244 km. The river generates the major chunk of electrical power for the state from its many big and small hydroelectric projects. Photo credit: Shaji0508 |
