Police Constable Kerry Young was a fictional character in the ITV police drama The Bill. She appeared in the series between July 2002 and October 2004 and was described as a sparky, down to earth and upbeat woman with confidence. She was brought up by her father, Graham, because her mother died when she was four years old.

[edit] Relationships and Subsequent Fate

Kerry first appeared on screen in July 2002 as a woman whom PC Nick Klein met in a nightclub - they went on to have a one-night stand. To Nick's embarrassment, she turned up the following morning as a new recruit at Sun Hill.

Kerry suffered a failed marriage to PC Luke Ashton (unbeknowst to her, Luke was gay and had a one-night stand with Sergeant Craig Gillmore on his stag night), and the couple had a miscarriage.

In 2003, Kerry's attention turned towards the new Sergeant Dale Smith, who at first showed a strong aversion towards her because of her track record with men. Kerry knew Smithy couldn't resist his chances with her and tried raping him at the back of an Area Car during an obbo, only to be interrupted by Des Taviner. Smithy thereafter avoided Kerry for several months.

Kerry from the beginning was smitten by PC Cameron Tait, and early in 2004 a relationship developed between them. Kerry however grew increasingly irate with Smithy's jealous behaviour, and in April 2004 - after a heavy drinking session - Kerry and Smithy ended up having a one-night stand.

Kerry had no recollection of her one-night stand with Smithy, and after some goading by PC Gabriel Kent, she believed that she was raped but did not make the allegation official. Smithy's reputation with the relief was damaged as the rumours spread and when Cameron eventually found out the truth, Kerry's personal life took centre stage during an armed robbery at a bank where the manger had a bomb strapped to his waist - Kerry was momentarily distracted by Cameron's demands for answers, and the bomb went off whilst she was unable to diffuse the panic. Kerry thereafter dropped the rape allegation completely, and soon enough her relationship with Cameron was back on track as the two became engaged.

Kerry's low point, however, came after she was brutally raped by the increasingly manipulative Gabriel. Kerry was distraught when she realised she couldn't tell the truth following her previous 'cry of rape', and when Cameron left Sun Hill following the revelation, Kerry's life was turned completely upside down. In October 2004 Smithy became alarmed by her self-destructive behaviour, particularly her insubordinacy towards superior officers, and her secret covert mission to expose the criminal family, the Radfords. Kerry's feelings intensified towards Smithy when she realised he cared about her - even when she faced suspension from the Met. Kerry was prepared to leave Sun Hill when she threatened Gabriel about revealing his true identity, and just as Kerry and Smithy declared their true feelings for each other, Gabriel took aim at the top of an adjacent building with a sniper rifle. Kerry was shot and died later in hospital.
