On the corner of West Main Street and North Broadway is a perfect example of one of Winchesters amazing historic buildings. Built in 1889, this building still stands today as a major puzzle piece that completes the downtown area of Winchester.
The Kerr Building has had many purposes and has been home to many companies in its time. It has been known as 'Eclipse Mills' (which happens to be its original name), and it has been a home to many corner drug stores.
Over the past couple of years the Kerr Building has been preserved and saved from its past deteration. Many workers have gone in and repaired damage from water and have fixed leaks in the roof. They have also repainted everything and replaced the old cracked windows with new sturdy ones. The goal is to make this building as good as new.
My favorite thing about downtown Winchester is that each historic building has its own story. It is interesting to think about because of all those different stories put together create what we know today as downtown Winchester. Without the Kerr Building it would just be a piece missing and that is what makes this building so significant.
