Kerpini (Greek: Κερπινή), is a small village in the north of the municipality of Kalavryta in the Achaia prefecture, Greece. Its 2001 population was 209 for the village. Kerpini was the home of the Zaimis family which produced several Greek revolutionary leaders, president of the Greek Parliament, two Prime Ministers, President of Greece and politicians.

[edit] Location and transportation

Kerpini is located about 30 km south of Aigio, south-southwest of Diakopto, southwest of Akrata, west of Athens, north of Kalavryta and about 70 km southeast of Patras. It is linked with a road connecting the GR-31 (Aigio - Pteri - Kalavryta) 4 to 5 km to the west. The boundary with Aigio and Diakopto lies to the north.

The area around Kerpini are mountainous, farmlands are in the valley areas. Hills also dominate the area. Much of the area are grassy and forests are also founded in the higher elevations.

Kerpini was ruled by the Ottomans. It became a part of Greece after the Greek War of Independence. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt. Samiko became connected with asphalt in the 1960s. More pavement was accessed in the late 20th century. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium.

In July 2007, forest fires ravaged the northern portion of the area. The fires had no effect on Kerpini at all, it did not affect the area southward.

Kerpini has a school for the entire municipal district (the former community), a church, a post office, and a square (plateia). Its nearest gymnasium (middle school), lyceum (secondary school) are in Kalavryta.
