John R. Kernodle, Jr. Middle School is a middle school located in the city of Greensboro, North Carolina, or in the northwestern quadrant of Guilford County, and has been operating since August 21, 2000.

Currently, there are approximately 990 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Kernodle.

Husband and father, John R. Kernodle, Jr., was born in Burlington, North Carolina. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University and graduated with honors from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Boston.

John was an active member of the community. He served others in capacities such as President of the Crescent Rotary Clubs, PTS President of Peeler Open Elementary, President of Fisher Park Neighborhood Association, President of the Young Lawyers Section, Board Chairman of the Eastern Music Festival, and chairperson of the Guilford County Board of Education.

His interest in education ran deep. He lectured at Guilford College, was an Adjunct Faculty member of Wake Forest School of Law, and an assistant to the Dean in Educational Administration, Higher Education, and Educational Research at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

John also brought a whole-hearted enthusiasm to those things which brought him joy--his family, Duke basketball, music, his church and a large circle of friends. His wide smile and welcoming personality made him a favorite companion. The gentleness and kindness that so distinguished his public life made him a treasured friend.

John's legacy of his life and work remains with Kernodle Middle School. Kernodle will always remember and strive to uphold the standards of John R. Kernodle, Jr.

Kernodle is a North Carolina School of Excellence from 2000-2008.

The North Carolina Middle School Association has recognized Kernodle Middle School as a "School to Watch". John R. Kernodle, Jr. Middle is the first Guilford County school to receive this recognition.

The "Schools to Watch" program is an outgrowth of the national program launched in 1999 by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. This initiative sought to recognize schools that were performing in an exemplary fashion in the three core areas identified by the Forum as critical for high-performing schools. These core areas are academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, and social equity. In addition, the Forum recognized that organizational and support structures had to be in place to support these efforts. In 2002, the Forum selected three states to continue the program on the state level; North Carolina was one of those states. Since that time, nineteen middle level schools across the state have been recognized as "schools to watch".
