Kermit L. Hall

Kermit Lance Hall (August 31, 1944 – August 13, 2006) was a noted legal history scholar. He is the author of American Legal History and The Magic Mirror, both his books on legal history. He served from 1994 to 1998 on the Assassination Records Review Board to review and release to the public documents related to the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Born in 1944, Hall was raised in Akron, Ohio. His father, Kermit, was a tire builder, and his mother, Katherine, was a bookkeeper. He was a Vietnam Era veteran [1]. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Akron and master's degree in 1967 from Syracuse University. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1972. He also received a Master of Studies in Law (MSL) degree from Yale Law School in 1980.
Hall became the 17th president of University at Albany in the State University of New York system on February 1, 2005. He served there with moderate distinction. He has served as President of other universities, the last of which was Utah State University.
Hall died on August 13, 2006 while swimming at his vacation home in South Carolina. Reports are as yet incomplete as to the cause of the accident, but early reports indicates that Hall suffered from a "cardiac event" prior to drowning.
A remembrance ceremony was held on August 14, 2006 at the campus academic podium by the small fountain. The ceremony was attended by numerous campus leaders including Provost Susan Herbst, SUNY Chancellor John Ryan, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Congressman John E. Sweeney, and Albany Mayor Gerald Jennings.
