Islahi Movement in Kerala, which had been confined within the circle of individual scholars, started functioning at first in an organizational manner since the birth of Kerala Muslim Aikya Sangham at Kodungalloor in 1922. Islahi Movements, which got a coherent structure, there onwards, under the wise leadership of Aikya Sangham, like Manappadan Kunhi Mohamed, Kottappurathu Seethi Mohammad, K.M. Seethi Sahib, K.M.Moulavi and E.K. Moulavi, soon comprehended the whole Kerala. The chief objectives of the Organization were to unite the Muslims of Kerala under the light of the Quran and Sunnah, and to promote religious and secular education[citation needed].
The leaders of Aikya Sangham, decided to form an organization of the Islamic Scholars (Ulama) with a view to save the Muslims who sank to the bottom of Shirk(polytheism and Hindu influence) and other religious innovations, and an ever first organization of Ulama was formed under the leadership of K.M.Moulavi, M.C.C. Abdurahiman Moulavi and E.K.Moulavi, from the scholars who gathered from all over Kerala at its second Annual Conference of Aikya Sangham held in Aluva, in the year of 1924.
In the beginning, Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama represented and comprised all Ulama in Kerala. But after sometime, a faction of Ulama in Kerala from Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, who after having understood the idea of Jam-Iyyathul Ulama was to propagate Thouheed (Islamic monotheism) and eradicate the existing beliefs of Muslim under the guidance of Quran and Hadeeth, separated from it and formed another organization called Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama. After few years again, another group of scholars who gave more importance to work for Hukumath Ilahi than spreading Thouheed among the Muslims also left Jam-Iyyathul Ulama.
Despite the above setbacks, Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama did expand their services in establishing Arabic Colleges. They established Madeenathul Uloom Arabic College in Pulikkal and Anwarul Uloom Women's Arabic college in Mongam. These two colleges are functioning under the guidance of Jam-Iyyathul Ulama. In the face of the leadership of Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, Kerala Aikya Sangham after having had its 12 years of progressive movements, retreated from the scene and entrusted all its aims and purposes and objectives to Jam-Iyyathul Ulama.
