[edit] Use in Civilian Airspace

They were also used to monitor the 1994 elections in South Africa. To do so were cleared for IFR flight in civilian controlled airspace. They were equipped with Mode C transponders and VHF radios that relayed communications between the Air Force operators/pilots and ATC. The military band communication link between the operators and the aircraft and then CiviL aviation VHF between the aircraft and ATC. I don't have a specific cite for this but I remember reading about it in South African aviation magazines at the time. Roger (talk) 21:58, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
