[edit] 2nd best SMS game
Kenseiden was one of the best Master System games. To me, it was second only to Phantasy Star.
It was a very tough action oriented side-scroller with lots of cool powerups in the form of aquired swordsmanship skills after beating the stage bosses and recovering the skill scrolls. It featured a map and after beating the 2 first stages, you had the choice of more than one path to where to go next.
One thing that really got me into this game is frightening mood: you're all alone, mostly making your path through the night -- probably because of techinical limitation, since a black sky is easier than blue and clouds... still, very effective moody -- combating endless non-stop youkais coming your way, with very japanese traditional music and some heartbumping tunes all the way making it all the more scary. The music is one of the best from the 8-bit days, IMO.
The training stages were hard as hell -- dogding incoming arrows all the while jumping award -- but well worth it, because of some cool powerups for those making it to the end. :)
Though the map permits you to try to confront the final boss without going through all regions and thus collecting all skill scrolls, i highly recommend you don't do it.
