I recall that the Illinois high school athletic sanctioning body - not sure of the correct name - passed a rule limiting how many track and field events a student could enter in a meet - after Ken Norton essentially won the state championship for his school by winning numerous events all by himself - a man among children, it would seem - came to be known as the Ken Norton Rule. Does anyone know the details?

[edit] Ken Norton Rule

Watched the Ali/Norton 1973 San Diego fight within a Legends of Boxing or something likethat show and that announcer (the guy who says let's get ready to rumble) said he entered 8 events, won 5 and finished 3 in the rest. He didn't say he won all 8 events. Someone verify the 8 wins and provide a cite.

[edit] Ken Norton is one of the "All Time Great Heavyweights"

Ken Norton is my top sports hero of all time. I have a lot of respect for Norton-he is a classy guy and a credit to boxing. I was very delighted and pleased to see that Norton received the Hall of Fame honors which he so richly deserves, and which he obviously earned. Norton was one of the best athletes of the 1970's-when I was a teenager and my peers and I looked up to him as a role model. We saw him break Ali's jaw, blast Bobick in one round and show clearly what a champion he was against Young and Holmes. Ken Norton's autobiography "Going the Distance" states that he read Think & Grow Rich and it changed his life. Norton shared in his book that he was prescribed to read Think & Grow Rich after he suffered his first boxing defeat and had to start over. He then went on to beat Muhammed Ali for the title. Norton shares in his book that he read Think & Grow Rich repeatedly during his career and he became a stonger person for it. Ken Norton won a Napoleon Hill Award for positive thinking, and became WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World in 1978. --Big City 03:12, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Norton was a great fighter

I remember watching the Norton/Holmes fight after work on a Friday night at Peggy's bar near Drake University in Des Moines. We couldn't believe the last round of the fight. It is the best toe to toe slugfest I have ever seen. Better than anything since including Ultimate Fighting and what not. If you young guys ever get a chance to watch that fight, be sure you do. It is surely a classic.

Even though Norton lost, I always thought he was a very classy guy. Good luck to him.

[edit] No mention of Jr?

His son had a fairly notible NFL career, being the first person to win 3 Super Bowl rings in a row. Or did I miss this in the article?
