Kentucky Bureau of Investigation

The Kentucky Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is an investigative law enforcement agency for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The department was founded in September 2004 by former Kentucky Attorney General Greg Stumbo and operates under the authority of the Office of the Attorney General.

The KBI is a specialized agency with five different investigative branches.[1]

  • Public Corruption and Special Investigations Branch
  • Medical Assistance Provider Fraud Branch
  • Welfare Recipient Fraud Investigations Branch
  • Drug Investigations Branch
  • Cyber Crimes/Identity Theft Branch

Criminal investigations in areas other than those listed above are not investigated by the KBI. They are investigated by either the Kentucky State Police or by local law enforcement.
