With support from Kennan Adeang, as Hammer DeRoburt was caught in a military situation, Aroi became president on the 17th August, 1989. Adeang then became finance minister. During his period of Presidential office, Aroi experienced health problems and left office on the 12th of December, following elections.
Aroi's ally, Bernard Dowiyogo, became the next president.

According to Australian rumour, Aroi DeRoburts is his biological son, but this is not proven. His daughter, Millicent Aroi, is Nauru's High Commissioner to Fiji, and is a composer.
