Kenneth Horsfield

Corporal Kenneth Horsfield of the Manchester Regiment, attached to the Special Air Service, was posthumously awarded the George Cross [1] for the courage he showed in attempting to rescue a comrade trapped and injured by an ammunition explosion in a demolition area in Bari in Italy on the 18th of August 1944. He was killed during this action by a second explosion.
Born at 11 George St. Hyde in Cheshire, on 30th September 1920, he enlisted in 1939 and also fought in North Africa. [2] Notice of his award appeared in the London Gazette on the 23rd of March 1945. He is buried in Bari War Cemetery.
