[edit] Character

Ken first appeared in Summer Bay in 1999, after spotting his estranged daughter Hayley's entry in art compettition along with her photo and decided to get in contact with his children again. Ken had an alcohol problem. Hayley was pleased to see Ken again, but Will wasn't. Ken had had an alcohol problem in the past which had caused him to behave very badly towards Will.

Ken immediately fell for Irene Roberts, the woman who was fostering his children. Will didn't take too kindly to this, worrying that Ken would hurt Irene. Irene got Ken an interview at the school for the job of school caretaker but he fell asleep on the beach and missed his appointment, then turned up at the school drunk. Both Will and Hayley told Ken to leave the Bay until he'd sorted himself out.

Ken returned some months later having got over his problems and soon started seeing Irene again. Still not convinced, Will tried to rock the boat by catching Ken supposedly drinking alcohol. It had been revealed that Ken had simply poured the beer out while the person he was drinking with wasn't looking. Will eventually forgave his father and the family were reconciled.

As time went on, Ken began to put down roots in Summer Bay by getting a stable job, taking over the garage Jesse McGregor ran before he went on the run which was now owned by Sally Fletcher. He also arranged for his younger son, Nick, to come and live with them (something Will had previously tried to do). Ken later proposed to Irene, but was met with opposition from Nick, who believed Ken was trying to erase the memory of his mother, Eve. It was then that it was revealed Eve had spent time in a mental asylum and was responsible for a series of attacks on people who had argued with the Smith children. When she attacked Irene, she was sent back to the asylum and Nick accepted Irene and Ken's relationship.

Irene accepted Ken's proposal and Ken persuaded her to have a big wedding, since they had both been married in a registry office first time around. A few days before the wedding, whilst Irene was at home trying on her wedding dress, tragedy struck. Ken was fixing a car and the jack slipped, causing the vehicle to crush him. Will panicked and sent for help. By the time help had arrived, it was too late. Ken died of his injuries, leaving Irene and the kids devastated.

Since his death, Ken has returned to the show on several occasions. He appeared in the last episode of 2000 when Hayley briefly saw him in the crowd when she was giving a speech at the launch of the book she had illustrated. In 2001, Nick ran away from home after he was caught stealing money from Irene and spent the night in Ken's old garage (which was scheduled to be demolished). Ken appeared to him in a dream and told him Irene would be angry but would be all right about it. When he woke up, Nick went home. His last appearance to date was in 2004 when Hayley married Noah Lawson. Although he wasn't visible to anyone else, as far as Hayley was concerned Ken was present walking her up the aisle.
