Kemijärvi railway station is located in Kemijärvi, Finland.
VR operates passenger train services from Kemijärvi to Rovaniemi connecting with the overnight sleeping car services to or from Helsinki. There are also bus services available operated on behalf of VR.
The direct overnight train service between Kemijärvi and Helsinki was controversially withdrawn in September 2006, with VR stating that its new sleeping car trains[1] could not operate with the diesel locomotives needed for the non-electrified railway north of Rovaniemi.[2]
The line from Rovaniemi to Kemijärvi opened as recently as 1934. As of 2007, the future of Kemijärvi's few remaining passenger train services are in doubt.
There is also a railway beyond Kemijärvi to Salla. This line is freight-only and is under threat of complete closure.
