At the start of the book Ansalon is in a terrible state. The world is being ruled by the Dragon Overlords. The only nation not fearing the dragons' wrath is Silvanesti who have created a magical shield preventing outsiders entrance and insiders escape. The Knights of Takhisis have become the Knights of Neraka and have become the grunts of the Dragon Overloards.

A group of Neraka Knights are scouting the barren land surrounding Neraka ruins when a terrible storm erupts. In the midst of the storm a young girl emerges named Mina. Mina then asserts herself as leader of the band of knights in the name of the One God.

Meanwhile in Solace, a young Solamnic Knight named Gerard is standing watch outside the Last Heroes' Tomb when Tasslehoff Burrfoot appears inside. Tas insists that he used a magical device to travel forward in time to speak at Caramon's funeral. After alluding arrest, Tas finds Caramon and proceeds to tell him the details of his funeral. However, there are some major inconsistancies between reality and Tas's tale. After visiting with Tas Caramon decides his life has lasted long enough. Running out of the Inn of the Last Home, he leaps over the edge and plummets to his death. In his final moments he notes with despair that his brother Raistlin is not there to meet him. Something is terribly wrong. He implores Gerard to take Tas to Dalmer, beleived to be dead, so that things may be set right and perhaps divine the truth to Tas's tale of an alternate future.

Gerard decides to find Caramon's son, Palin Majere in Qualinesti, as he may be the only one who knows of Dalmar's location. Disguised as a Knight of Neraka, Gerard sneaks into Qualinesti and tells Palin his problem.
