I love the idea of an encyclopedia of everything, and I love the idea of participating in it even more so.
Check out my blog for more of my thoughts and comments on things.
[edit] Types of edits I like to make
- Putting articles into categories. This includes category pages for people associated with specific newspapers and magazines. Also, I am trying to categorize more documentary films into topics.
- Correcting grammatical & spelling errors. (Yes, I realize I put a period at the end of a sentence fragment just now. There are more instances of this below.) I like to keep an eye on things like "Julliard" (The music school has a single "I" on either side of its double "L"s) and "Condoleeza Rice" (The Bush Administration Secretary of State spells her name with a double "Z" and a double "E.") Also, other commonly misspelled names like:
- More spelling -- Commonly misspelled states like Pennsylvania (and Massachusetts).
- I also like making redirect pages for commonly misspelled article titles like those above.
- Adding defaultsorts to categorized wiki articles whose titles start with articles (a, an, the) so that they index correctly. (The Who sorting under "W" rather than "T.")
- Tag articles that read like press releases for the person/organization about which the article has been written, and try to help get them on the road to NPOV.
- Removing apostrophes from proper names in which they do not belong, such as Publishers Weekly, the Directors Guild of America, and the Writers Guild of America. Also: The Battle of Harpers Ferry.
[edit] Types of edits I'd like to make more of
[edit] Articles and categories I have started
- The Real Ambassadors. This article made it to the front page of the English-language Wikipedia on 5/31/07. TRA is probably my favorite jazz album (and one of my favorite albums period). I was surprised to see that a) There was no Wikipedia entry for it, and b) There was not much about it on the Web that I could find easily. Please feel free to edit if you have better information than I do, and do yourself a favor and pick up a copy -- you won't regret it!
- Joan Graves. Her name popped up in an obituary I read for Jack Valenti, and I had recently seen This Film Is Not Yet Rated. Currently a stub.
- USS Tabberer (DE-418). I created this after I read the book Halsey's Typhoon. This is currently a stub. I highly recommend the book, and I know there is plenty of other information to be had. Accurately capturing the activity of the captain and crew of this ship during December, 1944's Typhoon Cobra would be an excellent way for Wikipedians to pay tribute to their heroic actions.
- The Truth Laid Bear. The TTLB Ecosystem is often used in the blogosphere, and again I was surprised to see there was no page. Stubbish.
- Category:Albums produced by Orrin Keepnews, Category:Albums produced by Teo Macero, Category:Albums produced by Nesuhi Ertegün -- I am a big jazz fan and I think it is useful to learn about the people who contributed to the jazz scene through contributions other than actual musical performances. None of these are currently complete. (Btw -- How do you link internally to category pages?)
- Jerry Baker, TV gardener. -- Done, 7/28/07
- Penn & Teller: Off the Deep End
- Several others that have slipped my mind for the moment.
[edit] Articles I want to start when I have the chance to do some fact-gathering
- Sue Shiomi, aka Sister Streetfighter.
- Elliott White Springs, WWI pilot and advertising idea man.
- Create a bunch more entries (even if they're just stubs) for Dave Brubeck's albums. Same for Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.
- Frederick Leypoldt, 19th-Century book-business publisher.
Sonny Eliot, Detroit TV weather reporter. I was beaten to this. Sonny Eliot is a great guy!
- David Grubin, PBS documentary filmmaker.
- A Perfect Candidate, documentary film about the 1994 Senate race between Chuck Robb and Oliver North.
- Kent Hence, the guy who beat GWB for a seat in the U.S. Congress in 1978.
