KCOY-TV is a television station in Santa Maria, California. It broadcasts on VHF channel 12, and is an affiliate of the CBS network. KCOY also operates local Fox affiliate, KKFX-CA, which it carries on its DT2 signal. KCOY's studios are located at 1211 West McCoy Lane. The station moved to the current location back in the late 80s.

The station is also the first in the Santa Maria/Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo market to broadcast a high definition signal. It can be found locally on Comcast at channel 212, on Cox Cable at channel 712, and on Charter Cable at channel 782.

KCOY's signal is also rebroadcast on K44DN on channel 44, serving Paso Robles. K44DN currently holds a construction permit to operate a digital companion channel on channel 38, under the callsign K38KQ-D.

The station went on the air on March 16, 1964. KCOY would not have existed if it were not for the Federal Communications Commission's decision in 1959 to move KFRE (now KFSN-TV) in Fresno from channel 12 to channel 30, under pressure from politicians in the Central Coast. This allowed channel 12 to be used in Santa Maria.

KCOY was owned by Stauffer Communications from the early 1980s until 1995, when the company merged with Morris Communications. However, the FCC did not allow Morris to keep the former Stauffer television stations due to the agency's rules in effect at the time against newspaper/broadcast station cross-ownership which affected several of the Stauffer markets where Morris already owned newspapers. KCOY was sold along with most of its sisters to Benedek Broadcasting in 1996. Three years later, Benedek traded KCOY to the Ackerley Group for that company's KKTV in Colorado Springs (CO). In 2002, Ackerley was bought out by Clear Channel Communications.

KCOY-TV was the hometown station in 2005 when it covered the trial of Michael Jackson since it was held at the Llewelyn Justice Center in Santa Maria.

On April 20, 2007, Clear Channel entered into an agreement to sell its entire television stations group to Newport Television, a broadcasting holding company controlled by the private equity firm Providence Equity Partners. The sale was finalized on March 14, 2008.[1] However, due to Providence Equity Partners' partial ownership of media properties which serve portions of the Santa Maria/San Luis Obispo market, KCOY and sister station KKFX-CA will be resold to the Cowles Publishing Company.[2] On May 7, 2008, the deal between Cowles Publishing Company and Newport Television closed.[3] However, Newport Television's website still lists KCOY and KKFX as two of its owned stations for the time being.

KCOY's morning news show Sunrise, which airs from 6:00 to 7:00 and updates between the Early Show every weekday, is the fastest growing news show on the Central Coast.

The station has had one of the largest news teams on the Central Coast, and is one of the most watched newscasts on the Central Coast. From January 1999 to March 2008, husband and wife anchors Drew & Nerissa Sugars anchored KCOY News 12 at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. Since 2000, they were awarded best local personalities by the Santa Maria Times . Prior to KCOY, Drew and Nerissa served as weekend anchors for KGET-TV in Bakersfield. Drew and Nerissa are now pursuing other opportunities.

[edit] Post-analog shutdown

After the analog television shutdown and digital conversion, which is tentatively scheduled to take place on February 17, 2009[4], KCOY-TV will remain on its current pre-transition channel number, 19. [5] However, through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers will display KCOY-TV's virtual channel as 12.
