Its format is country music. It covers all of Northeast South Dakota. Up until the end of Summer 2004 it derived the majority of its programming (excluding 6am-10am) from KGIM-FM (103.7) in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It now carries exclusively local programming.

On August 3, 2007, KBWS was acquired by Armada Media as part of a 4 station purchase for a total price of $2.9 million.[1]
