In Kazhugu, Rajini who is a reporter by profession, is the younger brother of Thengai Srinivasan. The latter is an ardent devotee of a so called priest, played by Surulirajan, whose credibility and capability is questioned by the skeptical Rajini right from the start. On one occasion Thengai Srinivasan shows his locker full of money and gold, that is safe guarded by a new technology bought in Japan, including the operating steps, to the priest to acquire his blessings. That same night a couple of thugs try to break in and steal the contents of the locker, which raises further questions in Rajini's mind about the priest's intentions thus setting the stage for the reporter to find out the truth behind the priest's life style.

Rathi plays the role of Rajini's lover and wife. As the wedding present they receive an RV, who then with their friends have fun driving around when they meet Vanitha a village belle. One night the group hear some drum sounds and set out to find it. Hidden in the bushes they are audience to a sacrificial ceremony of Vanitha. When reported to the police, the incident is put off. The whole village claims that there was no such person as Vanitha. Thus Rajini with his friends tries to find out the truth during which one of his friend is killed in the same town where the priest is. At the same time, Thengai Srinivasan arrives to meet the head priest who in turns plots to cheat him off his wealth and sacrifice his daughter to attain the highest power. Cho and Sumalatha, reporters from different newspapers are planning on exposing the scam by going undercover and serving the priest. They help Rajini to expose the truth about the priest and his goons and save his niece.

The movie ends on a happy note with the goons being arrested after a great fight involving a whole range of weaponry and thugs.
