RfA and everything else

Áine

Thanks for your encouragement! De-GeoffMGleadallification has been an ongoing priority of mine for at least a year and a half, though I haven't been able to contribute to Wikipedia as much as I'd like lately. The Celtic religion articles have also suffered from a much earlier rot introduced by User:TUF-KAT, who bulk-imported a lot of nonsense copied from some online Neopagan list of gods. (My impression is that TUF-KAT, like Wikipedia itself, has evolved a lot, and that s/he has now thoroughly reformed – in fact s/he's now an admin.) As for GeoffMGleadall's work, some of it can be sourced and presented in a respectable fashion. I've always opted for that M.O. if possible, which is why it's been slow going. Anyhow, thanks again for your kind words! Solidarity, Q·L·1968 19:47, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

I've just noticed with joy that GeoffMGleadall is back on Wikipedia, and that his recent contributions have much more substance and attentiveness to sourcing. (singing:) You've got to admit, it's getting better; getting better, all the time. Q·L·1968 19:52, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Copyedit request

I see that you are busy at present, but here is a request with a relaxed timescale. At some point I plan to put St Kilda up for peer review and FA. If you have a moment (or two - it's a bit on the long side) I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at it. Slainte. Ben MacDui (Talk) 16:29, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I poked at it a little bit, will see what else I can get to :-) - Kathryn NicDhàna 03:51, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

New Userbox

This user is respected by Tinkleheimer and has done great work in Tinkleheimer's eyes.

I made my very first userbox and am passing it out. I won't be terribly offended if don't put it on your page. And if you want to make one for yourself, just create a subpage under your user page and just copy/paste the code from User:Tinkleheimer/RespectedByTinkleheimer. Thanks!!Trevor "Tinkleheimer" Haworth 03:10, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Why thank you! - Kathryn NicDhàna 03:51, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

My RFA
Thanks for your support in my recent request for adminship, which was successful. I'll do my best to justify the confidence you've placed in me! Dppowell 23:15, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

my username

Yeah, I know, I liked it too. In short, though, I got tired of people misconstruing the reference and thinking I was a communist / classist / fan of violence / Hispanic ... none of which I am. I'd had vandalism to my userpages a couple of times, plus an oppose at my (unsuccessful) RfA with the rationale "Too few edits. Objectionable username." Figured it wasn't really worth the trouble anymore.

Ah well. I can take comfort in the fact that, for anyone who catches this reference, there are some subversive overtones.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! - Revolving Bugbear (formerly Che Nuevara) 11:48, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Samhain

Hey Kathryn, the etymology looks good to me. I don't care for inline citations, but they could be changed to footnotes in a trice. I doubt Stokes' idea about *samani- can be exact, because how does he turn the vowel into o for SAMON[IOS]? But it's sourced, so no worries. The f thing looks okay, and I agree, it's a spurious folk etymology. The only thing that looks fishy to me is the confidence with which the months of the Coligny calendar are identified as April/May or whatever – there are at least three different theories kicking around for when the Coligny year began. Q·L·1968 10:29, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, Dab indicated a couple source, but didn't bother to put it in the format already established in the article, and one is rather vague. The confidence/tone about a particular theory needs to be addressed. In the cases where the theory is only one of a number of reasonable theories, we do need to indicate that. - Kathryn NicDhàna 21:25, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

No one expects a Pigman admin!

Wallowing in my RfA: This time it's personal...
My sincere thanks for your support in my request for adminship, which ended with 51 supports, 0 opposes, and 0 neutral. Doubtless it was an error to put one of the government-bred race of pigmen in any position of authority, but I hope your confidence in me proves justified. Even a man pure of heart and who says his prayers at night can become a were-boar when the moon is full and sweet. Fortunately, I'm neither a were-pig nor pure of heart so this doesn't appear to be an imminent danger to Wikipedia for the moment. Fortunate as well because were-pig hooves are hell on keyboards and none too dexterous with computer mice. If ever I should offend, act uncivil, misstep, overstep, annoy, violate policy, or attempt to topple the fascist leadership of Wikipedia, please let me know so I can improve my behaviour and/or my aim. I am not an animal; I am an admin. And, of course, if there is any way in which I can help you on Wikipedia, please do not hesitate to ask me. Despite my japes, I am indeed dedicated to protecting and serving Wikipedia to the best of my foppish and impudent abilities. I will strive to be an admirable admin, shiny and cool, reasonable and beatific. Pigmanwhat?/trail 05:25, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Post Scriptum: I believe my collaged graphic at left, which incorporates the WP globe and mop image, falls under the rubric of parody for my purposes here. Or is it satire? Regardless, it's a legitimate and legally protected First Amendment usage under US law. Complaints and allegations that this is an improper "fair use" image will be entertained on my talk page, probably with fruit juice, finger food and exotic coffees.

questions of style

I have also replied on User talk:Bloodofox. How you can perceive my attitude as hostile at CR in view of statements like this where I practically contort myself to show sympathy for your point of view I don't know. I have also just stated yesterday that I consider you a good editor well worthy of adminship. I am seriously at a loss how you can say I treat you the same as the trolls. Maybe I have insulted you without being aware of it? Feel free to present me with a diff where my tone is off, and I will be most willing to apologize. --dab (𒁳) 08:06, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi dab, I think we're having some miscommunication here. I don't think you treat me the same as the trolls, and I am grateful for your support and cooperation. I was concerned that you were not taking the concerns of other editors seriously, and wanted to encourage you to think about their perspective. I am sorry if I did this in a way that was hurtful to you. I will respond in more detail over at User talk:Bloodofox. - Kathryn NicDhàna 01:16, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: Ooops.

Sorry about that db on a cat that wasn't empty. A user had created a whole slew of bizarre cats, and I was flagging a number of them. In the haze of surreality from reading their contribs, I wound up flagging that one, too. The only reason it's not empty, I'm pretty sure, is because they've made a userbox for it and posted it a few places. So, yeah, the names for these categories they've made are nonsense, but, you're right, it's not empty. Oops. Sorry. - Kathryn NicDhàna 04:51, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks again for your understanding. - Kathryn NicDhàna 20:31, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Secure links

I noticed on the Shalom RfA that you left links to secure.wikimedia.org - how and why, out of curiosity? AvruchTalk 16:18, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Avruch. I usually edit WP via the secure connection. The main advantage for me is that it seems more compatible with my ISP; the normal server tends to log me out periodically, which can be frustrating. The disadvantage is the secure connection is slower than the normal one. Whichever prefix you use to access the files, http://en.wikipedia.org/ or https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/ , the files accessed are the same. It's just a matter of how you get there. :-) - Kathryn NicDhàna 20:31, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Pedophillia claims in Celtic article again

Kathryn I noticed that this claim has returned exactly as it was before to the Celtic article. Do you remember when we discussed this in February 2007? I don't understand why this has been allowed to be put back in again - I noticed you have been active on this article from your posts in the Discussion. Have you changed your position on this or did I misunderstand your position last time we discussed the 'Celtic Family Life' entry at the beginning of the year? Has some sort of consensus on this been reached by the people editing the site?

Drifter bob (talk) 19:47, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, this is a problem. Making a whole section with "pedophilia" in the title is placing undue weight on what is a passing mention in the historical texts. As it is mentioned in the historical sources, I do think it's appropriate to include the original quote, and perhaps a brief, sourced comment about whether the original recorder meant "boys" or "other young men". But it should be mentioned only in context, and along with other historical data on relationships, not given an entire section, imho. - Kathryn NicDhàna 20:31, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations! Some points to remember:

  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one when you do.
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Remember to use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology, usually somewhere very public.
  6. and finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

And whilst I'm here, may I be the first to call for you to be desysopped (to get it out of the way now)? ;o) :oD ➔ REDVEЯS isn't wearing pants 17:18, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Talk page for templates relating to pagan topics

Hello there Kathryn, I'm aware that at least five different templates have recently been produced and added to pages within this general area. I'm a bit concerned that this profusion has taken place without much discussion from editors who work on these articles, and I'd suggest that this should be discussed centrally so that there is a degree of uniformity in articles within the same family. I'm writing to you because I know you have been involved with these articles quite closely. If you would like to join this discussion, please do not reply here, but go instead to the talk page I have set up for this purpose. Of course if you want to have a 1:1 discussion about this, then please do reply here or on my own talk page. Many thanks! Kim Dent-Brown (Talk) 00:02, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Jeff Rosenbaum

Hi, Kathryn. Jeff asked me to take a look at the article, and I'm at a loss trying to understand your edits. Perhaps you can fill me in, as I it doesn't make any sense from where I stand. Thanks. —Viriditas | Talk 03:22, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Viriditas. The problem is WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIO, just for a start. Jeff has been working extensively on his biography, Jeff Rosenbaum. He has also been placing links to his website that are being flagged by both the spam watchlist and COI Reports. Jeff has been responding with hostility[3] [4] [5] when there are calls for citations on the articles he works on (almost all of which have COI problems as he almost exclusively works on articles for people whose careers are intertwined with his own to one extent or another). In addition to COI he is in violation of ArbCom. If you haven't read it, I suggest familiarizing yourself with Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Starwood/Proposed decision#Rosencomet_cautioned, the Starwood Arbitration itself, as well as this RfC. As for the number of COI articles he's created since the ArbCom decision, I think Jeff just wore people down and they stopped paying attention; but by heavily editing his bio, as well as edit-warring over inappropriate links (check the free press site links - they are "letters to the editor" / forum posts, not "articles"), he is drawing attention to his behaviour again and, looking over his recent activities, I have to say it's not looking good. - Kathryn NicDhàna 04:06, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply. Please give me some time to take all this in. I've asked Rosencomet to stay away from the articles for now, so I hope there won't be any need to take action against him at this time. From what I can tell, his edits do not appear to be aggressive, but I am concerned about the spamming allegations which I hope we can solve. —Viriditas | Talk 16:01, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
I've asked Rosencomet to declare a COI on his user page. Can you recommend any suggested wording? —Viriditas | Talk 00:45, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
I need to give this some thought. Right offhand, I think Jeff should own up to the findings of the arbitration, as well as his own past admissions on WP: that he is the executive director of ACE,[6] that he is the main organizer/producer of the Starwood Festival[7] and Winterstar Symposium, and is in charge of hiring acts for these venues. He has also admitted in the past to writing the bio blurbs on the rosencomet.com website that in many cases are the sole sources for these articles, though lately he seems to be denying that. One of the problems with all these artist articles he's been creating is he uses them as a place to insert mentions of himself, his work, the tapes he sells, and his events. By working to raise the profile of the artists he hires, he is also working to raise the profile of his festival and, I think it's reasonable to assume, drive more business his way. I think it's obvious how this violates WP core policies, most notably WP:COI and WP:SPAM. The two RfC's (the earlier one is here) both showed consensus that he is astroturfing and spamming for his projects. (You might also note that the only person/people who took Rosencomet's side in this have now all been blocked as sockpuppets/sockpuppeteers). The outside statement in particular, endorsed by fourteen editors, seven of whom are admins, stated, "2. All the articles in question have links to Starwood Festival and its website. Many of these links fall outside of WP:NPOV Undue Weight, overstating the importance of a performer apperance at the starwood festival. As such these links can be considered a case of WP:SPAM. The links have all been added by User:Rosencomet who is connect to the event so WP:VAIN also applies." RfC outside view, point #2
I think he needs to not only admit his COI, but respect consensus and WP policy and cease working on articles that he's so connected to, stop adding massive unsourced content and OR to articles, as well as follow the basic WP spam guidelines of not inserting internal or external links to himself or his projects into WP. - Kathryn NicDhàna 02:16, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Right, I see your point. I think where the links are clearly being used inappropriately they should be removed. I hope Rosencomet will at least meet you half way on this. Thanks for explaining the situation. —Viriditas | Talk 02:39, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
It's not about meeting anyone "halfway." It's about following WP policy. If he can't do that, even after all these warnings, his ability to edit is going to be taken away. I think the only reason it hasn't happened yet is no one was paying attention. That has changed now. - Kathryn NicDhàna 23:45, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually, it is about meeting Rosencomet halfway, because your interpretation of policy is only half of the story. I am upset that you recently decided to smear my name across multiple AfD's without so much as asking me.[8] I hope you will think twice about doing that in the future. Perhaps the opinions of other editors doesn't concern you, but you had no right to do that considering that I am fully capable of making an informed decision on the matter without you passing judgment on my character or my motives. If you had bothered to even do the most basic research, you would have discovered that the only reason Rosencomet and I are in contact with each other is due to a massive disagreement we had on Talk:Hippie, where we both learned to respect each others divergent views on the subject. According to you, respecting the opinion of another editor is apparently "support" and "agreement". Has it occurred to you that I am able to make my own decisions based on an informed opinion? Couple this with your accusations regarding Mattisse recently on my talk page,[9] and your express support of an involved administrator blocking Rosencomet [10] and I am beginning to have serious doubts about your neutrality. —Viriditas | Talk 10:33, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

NicDhana

I was just wondering what this word/name meant, as I'm curious about Celtic but don't know more than a few words? Or isn't it Celtic?Merkinsmum 00:26, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

P.S. We share a name and it's spelt the same!:) I don't think there's as many of us as there are Catherines and the other spellings.Merkinsmum 00:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi! The "Kathryn" spelling is Welsh in origin, though it can now be found in use in Ireland, as well. But the Irish usage of it is more recent, and among English-speakers; the Gaelic versions of the name are Caitríona (Irish) and Catrìona (Gaelic), or the related Caitlín (Irish). Some of the recent Irish and Scottish ancestors I'm named for spelled it "Catherine", but my grandmother decided to re-Celticize it when she named one of my aunts, who I am in turn named for. Names get recycled a lot in my family. NicDhàna is Scottish Gaelic. The word or name Dana, Dàna or Dána has a variety of meanings. In my case it's actually a matronymic and a family name. - Kathryn NicDhàna 01:04, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Edit to talk page

I think your edit here became moot when I removed the comment it was referring to (four minutes before your note), and it now reads as if Mr Senseless (talk · contribs) is an impostor/sock :) Daniel 05:45, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! Deleted. I spotted it right after I saved. Don't know why it didn't show up in preview. I was considering deleting the imposter post, but wasn't clear if that was the best way to go. Now I know :-) - Kathryn NicDhàna 05:51, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Which reminds me...

...EFD got deleted, then recreated, but you won't be seeing me there. —BoL @ 03:19, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Actually, it didn't get deleted. It's been moved. Your RfA got deleted. There's a difference. Also, I'm not leaving indefinitely and, even if I were, you still wouldn't be allowed to edit it. So perhaps your time would be better spent doing something constructive to actually improve the encyclopedia. Also, just as an aside, Katheryn never participated in EfD, so why even bring it up? LaraLove 03:34, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I know that. And not only that, I didn't even want to run for RFA. Someone told me to, but I won't reveal who he is, though. (Not Gp75motorsports.) —BoL @ 03:36, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually actually, I did participate in a few EfD discussions. And wasn't it Gp75motorsports... On Wheels who nominated you? - Kathryn NicDhàna 03:48, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Someone told me over e-mail that I had to run for RFA or he was going to reveal my old identity. —BoL @ 03:54, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
That sounds like an exceedingly odd request. Why is your old identity a secret, and if so, why does the RfA-as-a-threat person know it? - Kathryn NicDhàna 04:35, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

(undent)You may want to check out my pages. We've interacted before. If you know the name, please do not mention it anywhere in Wikipedia. —BoL @ 04:44, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Llewellyn Wikipedia-wide

Hey Kathryn, you may be interested in this article: Holly King (myth). I just removed a bunch of typically Llewellyn-derived minformation from a book by Dorothy Morrison entitled Yule: A Celebration of Light and Warmth off of the Yule log page derived largely from the same source. As an example, the book contains such gems as "Many people believe that Santa's reindeer 'represent the stags that drew the chariot of the Norse gift-giving goddess, Freya.'" There's no source associating Freyja with stags that I am aware of, there's no source for Freyja being some sort of "gift-giving goddess", etc. It's just the usual new age stuff to sell a book and turn a dollar. The reason I mention the Holly King article is because it's trampling more in your neck of the woods and you may notice some of it appearing on some of the articles you regularly deal with as 'tis the season. :bloodofox: (talk) 23:54, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

In cases where the book being used as a source is full of inaccuracies, it is not suitable for use, especially when it's the only source cited. I cut the gross inaccuracies from Holly King. I'm glad to help, but don't be afraid to go ahead and be bold when you see this sort of bad editing happening. It's always better to have an accurate stub than a longer piece full of misinformation. Edmund Lenihan

WOW! You've really turned this article around! My hat is off to you! I'll need to look at what you did and see if I can refit the places where I could more accurately re-insert my first four references to support it. Trilobitealive (talk) 03:43, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! And thank you for your work on the article, as well. I don't have the books you cited here, so, yes, it would be better for you to decide on their placement. I'm glad to help. Eddie's work is very important, and I'm happy to see him get some recognition. - Kathryn NicDhàna 03:59, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
If you don't mind, I'll ask you for the favor of checking on the Edmund Lenihan again. I've gotten ahead of myself and have expanded it again maybe too much so it probably needs a more experienced eye to delete whatever is not appropriate. I really don't know what are the boundaries of original research, NPOV and of being fully on topic in this area (my usual interest is biological sciences) so would bow to your more experienced judgment. I'll take a few days off now, waiting to see if I can get rights to a picture from his publisher. RegardsTrilobitealive (talk) 07:48, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

No pictures so far

Sorry, his publisher just gave me info to contact him and he's not replied to the email so I'll try to find other sources.Trilobitealive (talk) 21:17, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

League of Copyeditors roll call

Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

Move of Scottish kings

There is a proposed move of Scottish kings at Talk:Kenneth I of Scotland that I thought I'd bring to your attention. I think you have had things to say on this subject in the past. Probably won't be successful, but that's wiki for you. Best regards, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 17:27, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Your comment re ACE - ????

What is my connection to ACE? I have less connection than you. I do not know anything about the subject matter as you do and do not edit related articles. My original involvement was putting {{fact}} tages on Starwood articles, hence the sockpuppets who pursued me for six months. I was caught up in the Starwood arbitration because of the sock puppets, but the ArbCon found no problem with my behavior. I do not edit articles that are even peripherally connected with the subject matter of Starwood unlike you, at least not knowingly as it is not a subject matter that interests me at all. I do not get where you are coming from. I voted for you for admin happily, so I am totally surprised at this reaction from you now. Rather, you should stay away from Starwood, it seems to me as there is overlap in your interest areas and Rosencomet's . Regards, Mattisse 00:12, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Oh dear, no, Mattisse, you misunderstood. I am sorry if it wasn't clear. I meant it would be best if you made the changes to the article, as you have no connection to ACE. I meant that any of us who have no connection to ACE should do the changes, instead of Rosenbaum. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Is that clear? I'm sorry to have unintentionally caused you distress. - Kathryn NicDhàna 00:25, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Ekajati and new(?) contributor

I'm sorry to bother you, but we have an issue at Thelema that involves old User:Ekajati (who was active on this page at least as recently as 19 December). You can see the Cliff's Notes at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/81.9.61.227. Thank you for your attention. Dan (talk) 06:31, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I'd say an RfC is not necessary. If the IP is that of a banned user, or open-proxy, or being used inappropriately in some other way, we'll just block 'em. - Kathryn NicDhàna 23:07, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

How come every criteria of mine is always a failure?

I just want to know because I'm trying to make wikipedia like a success in information, and every time I try, my criteria is being deleted. When I first logged in to be a user of wikipedia I read that wikipedia is trying to upgrade, and be a great internet source. So I try to help by taking up my time to look for all types of information, and begin to create a page, and then two days later I go to find out it's either being deleted, it got re-directed to a page, or it's all ready gone. I just don't get it. I give resources, and everything. I try my hardest to help with Wikipedia. And I don't think it's fair that all my stuff is being thrown away, and that I'm in danger of being blocked out of editing on Wikipedia just because I'm trying to help out Wikipedia. I don't even get what I did to get blocked out of wikipedia, I am really trying here, and it's just not enough for none of you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Halleana (talkcontribs) 03:05, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Fàilte Halleana. The reason your new pages are being deleted is that most of them were blatant copyright violations, copied and pasted from other websites. It is not permitted to copy and paste content from other websites onto Wikipedia. Other pages you started seem to have been created before you'd looked to see that there were similar pages already in existence. While I appreciate that you want to help and feel frustrated, you need to understand that Wikipedia has rules that we all must follow if we want to write and edit here. Please read the links on policy that others have kindly left on your talk page. I'd also suggest What Wikipedia is Not, and WP:V and WP:RS, which explain how information you add has to be supported by reliable sources, and what constitutes a reliable source. For instance, the "Celtic Astrology" things you tried to add were already debunked by the reliably-sourced content in the articles you tried to add them to. I could give other examples, but that should give you a place to start. Best Wishes, - Kathryn NicDhàna 21:43, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
