WARNING: I do not read my talk page any more. If you have a question about the edit counter, you should probably ask User:Interiot (and then use his edit counter instead). If you have to contact me about something else, mail river [at] attenuate [dot] org.
Please separate sections on this page with '----' rather than a heading ('=='). I'll reply on your talk page unless you are anonymous or request otherwise (or you are asking about the edit counter and 20 people want to know the same thing, in which case i'll write a single reply here). Before asking me to do something, please see if it's already on my todo list. Thanks!
[edit] Tool note.
Hey, don't forget that I said you should add the new pages made count to the edit count tool :) --Phroziac (talk) 19:44, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
- Heh, I came here to suggest the same thing. Plus one other suggestion, to insert two columns which say (1) how many distinct pages in a namespace one has edited, and (2) how many new pages one has created in a namespace. Oh, one more thing. The tool is simply amazing. Über job, Kate. Jon Harald Søby \ no na 14:04, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
Kate, I once posted this as a message to you. This was about your anarcho-dissolutionism.

[edit] Multiple counts on Kate's Tools
Hi Kate - are you the developer of the addictive wonderful Kate's tool? I am a (technologically-backward) researcher who want to study about anonymous editing on the Wiki and hoping to get the editing count of about 800 users. I am wondering if there is any tool or script that can help me obtain the data more effectively as compared to me running all the user names / IPs individually for 800 times then pasting the results on excel? Thanks so much in advance for your advice. researchinganon 28 July 2005 06:15 (UTC)
[edit] wiktionary tag - moved this message from all over the place, grace a Raul
I've never subscribed to the newsletter, but isnt there something like a daily wiki email inculding wikiquote's quote of the day, and pedia's Article of the day. Is there a Wiktionary contribution to the newsletter? If not, I've been working on Wiktionary:Wiktionary:Interesting new entries, and maybe some of these can be put into the newsletter. What do you reckon? --Wonderfool t(c) 14:32, 28 July 2005 (UTC). Please reply here, and at my talkshow page. Cheers

Thank you, Kate, for incorporating the number of articles into your edit count. I have used it and found it very informative for my purpose. Thank you again, Kate! PM Poon 11:40, 18 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Protoindoeuropean
I have recently added some examples in Proto-Indo-European language, which is written with non-traditional, but adapted to Latin alphabet and non-professional readers phonetics.
This makes them more readable for non-professionals and gives an opportunity to imagine the ancient language.
The texts I posted were the famous Schleicher's fable, S.K. Sen's tale and some prayers.
But I have found that my addition is deleted by a German user Dbachmann and it has started "edit war".
So I ask to bring the page to a neutral form, but including my examles (may be with some comment) and protect the page from vandalism.
Sincerely yours, Ilya
For what it's worth, WP:KT needs to be updated for the Portal namespace (it currently says "Unknown Namespace 100" and "Unknown Namespace 101" for Portal: and Portal talk: ). ral315 22:57, August 28, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Deleted Pages
Great job on the tool. :) Is there any way deleted edits can be recorded? A lot of people participate in tagging articles as speedy deletions, but never get credit for them. I know that this is probably impossible, as deleted edits are removed from a person's history. Acetic'Acid 14:09, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Comparing distinct pages
Kates tool can tell me total of 1996 distinct pages. I was wondering if a tool that counts the number of my distinct pages and some other users distinct pages. Should be usefull in determineing people obsessed with one another. -- Cat chi? 01:55, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] More Kate's tooling
As you may or may not know, a new namespace has been created, the Portal namespace. When I use my Kate count, it registers as unknown namespace 100 and unknown namespace 101 for its talk. Fix this Kate? Redwolf24 (talk) 03:11, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
- You forgot to say 'please.' Acetic'Acid 04:39, September 6, 2005 (UTC)
Ah, a code warrior. Script for machines. Slow on portal namespace. I understand that, too. To me, portals are access points for several media on the same topic. For instance, there might be IRC channels, mailing lists, USENET newsgroups (multicast e-mail), radio, and television -- all about sensible human ingestion, and none of them on Anthony Robbins. That's a portal. I don't really understand "portal" in the context of wiki. I found it actually quite difficult to find and use the IRC channels. Know what? I haven't downloaded the software for it on this Windows installation, and I don't care to do so. I can browse, and if I come back to a page I fixed and it's broken, then some of it's probably broken properly. Brewhaha@edmc.net 13:49, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Heya,
Just a quick note to remind you of the London Meetup this coming Sunday (the 11th of September) that you signed up for (as 'possible', so you'll be definitely coming then, won't you? ;-)). It's at the Archery Tavern, just next to Lancaster Gate tube station, from 13:00 (BST) onwards.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

[edit] Assigning edits to my ID Gbeeker
Kate, I remember reading somewhere that you (or another administrator) could assign edits made while not signed in to my user ID, but I can't find that page now. Do you know who I would contact to assign the edits on List of Unix programs that are logged to IP 63.78.207.104 and IP 63.78.207.135. I made 17 edits, all on 12 September 2005, that for some reason didn't show up under my ID. Thanks! Gbeeker 12:58, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
After reading Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit, I found that this service is suspended, perhaps forever. I can understand why. I also noticed that there were a few edits made on other days for this IP, that I didn't make. So I am not be concerned about these edits being attributed to me. Add to this, the fact that there is a backlog of more than 170 requests right now. Gbeeker 16:40, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] User login statistics
I run a genealogy wiki for my family, using the Mediawiki software. It is password protected, and I would love to be able to track user login statistics, such as who logs in and when. I have so far been unable to find any info on this anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you!
--- Hey kate, first off I just want to say thanks for your wonderful tool. I was just wondering if there would be a chance you could incorporate a "Edit summaries used X% of the time" feature? It would be wonderful. -GregAsche (talk) 18:01, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
Kate, I logged into your tool site and found this message:
just to remind everyone that editcountitis really is a bad thing, the edit counter is having a short holiday. why not spend some time in contemplation of what Wikipedia is really about, anyway?
Needless to say, I was shocked and horrified. I have a tendency to break my changes up across too many edits and so I have been using your tool to watch my edits/page number in the hopes of driving it lower. I do not have editcountitis. I want to say in the strongest possible terms that I do not have a problem. By the way, when will it be back up... soon I hope. Just as long as we are clear though, I can stop any time I want to. Qaz
- Site is still down. I still do not have a problem but I am getting the shakes. It is certainly not from withdrawal because I am not addicted and I can stop when I want to. I bet it would go away if the site came back up though so no harm in that is there? Qaz 16:19, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Edit count of Number of Article Titles
Thank you, Kate, for incorporating the number of pages into your edit count. Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough, but actually, I was looking for "number of article titles." I wonder whether you will have the time to do that. Thanking you in anticipation. PM Poon 03:56, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Kate, I saw your new notice and I understand how cheesed off you seem to be with this obsession with edit counts. Nevertheless, I hope that you can consider computing "Number of Article Titles" as I would like to track the number of articles (excluding talk pages, etc) that I have edited. I know that it is not a foolproof method of tracking my own output as some articles takes me less than a few minutes, while others take me as long as two days. Nevertheless, it is merely a guide for my own reference, rather than to compete with any one. — PM Poon 09:54, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

I am in complete agreement. Well done, Kate! Thank you amazingly much for putting this all in perspective. Sure, it's nice to see the number of edits and the dedication to the project, but making numerous small edits and not using the preview button should NOT be rewarded. It's much more beneficial to see the edit summaries, and others, and to actually not be lazy. Thanks for a) creating the tool, and b) keeping things from getting out of hand. Congrats my friend. -Mysekurity e-mail 20:42, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

- Your new Edit-Count-itis warning is timely and fits well
- Maybe you read my mind or saw the difficulties that I myself and others encounter in RfA's where people look at Edit-Count-itis, but, in any case, I think you did a good job in your warning, covering probably all the bases. (Let's not forget that editing here is a fun, but unpaid job, and not give it more due weight than "real life" things, whilst still wishing success and blessings to the Wiki-Encyclopedia here.) In short, thank you for introducing some common sense into your already cool programming skills here: Your new Edit-Count-itis warning is timely and fits well.--GordonWatts 00:37, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi Kate, don't know who's been complaining about the warning, I actually like it being there as a reminder that edit counts aren't actually as important as, say, contributing good stuff. Anyway just thought I'd say hi. -- Francs2000 02:18, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- PS - I'll stop using it when I get to 30,000...
Hi Kate, (sorry my english isn`t very well), but thank you so much for the changes. I tried to discuss this point at the RfA-Page on the German Wikipedia and at the german IRC-Channel as well but nobody seems to know what i mean... Thank you! Anneke
- At the risk of sounding like an AOL user, I'd like to say "me too!" Editcountitis can be used for bullying. My editcount went up very sharply after doing some rather remidial DABbing - as opposed to actually writing. However, I like the tool a lot: thanks for maintaining it. [edit] Sorry, But...
Your editing counting tool is so great that I still use it as frequently as I did before you got pissed off at the whole editcountitis nonsense and put the big essay on there. Sorry, I just ignore all the words and go straight for the edit counter.
You can claim a small victory with other people you've bugged, but you can claim a huge victory with me since that thing makes Wikipedia so much more interesting. Karmafist 18:15, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I think the edit count is a good tool, even though edit counts do not tell the whole story, and can sometimes be misleading, unless we compare apples to apples.
- For me, it tracks my own contribution to this community portal. It could be personal vanity, but if it doesn't hurts others, should I be condemned for so doing? And would I bother to track my contributions if I have no love for this portal?
- I am not interested in how many edits I do, because sometimes, I forget a comma or an "s", and the edit count increases by one merely because I subsequently corrected it. I am more interested in counting the major efforts that I have put in, but then again, no counter can help me do this.
- I have asked Kate to count the number of articles (or do they called it "article titles") so that I know how many articles I have reviewed, but he has not responded. I understand that he is very much cheesed off with the way his counter has been misused, but then again, a tool is just a neutral thing that can be used for either good or bad. That atomic energy has been misused for mass destruction does not mean that we should forget about it, right? — PM Poon 13:47, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
- I think Kate's tool is very, very valuable. I'm concerned that the recent disruptions in service to it, and now the warnings about it and having to press another button, are headed towards the possibility of removing it as a resource entirely. The community has come to depend on this resource for a variety of reasons. Some of these are:
-
- Quick determination about the experience level of a user who's recent edits are questionable. This is useful in vandal fighting. A long time user is unlikely to have a meltdown and suddenly become a surreptitious vandal. Knowing the edit count (and distribution) for an editor helps ascertain good faith. While WP:AGF is a Wikipedia guideline, the reality is that vandal fighters frequently assume bad faith of new editors, and good faith for experienced editors. Kate's tool helps to at least encourage good faith for experienced editors. The tool does not apply to inexperienced editors, as seeing their contributions at less than 50 quickly shows the lack of experience of the new user. Without Kate's tool, it is more ponderous to determine the experience level of a user.
- While edit counts should not be used to determine the acceptability of an admin nominee, the distribution of edits is a very valid basis on which to evaluate an admin nominee. Kate's tool provides a very easy way of gaining this information. Without the tool, gathering such information is quite time consuming in comparison. If Kate's tool went away, there'd be a greater chance people would revert to relying on edit counts.
- Users using Kate's tool to see other people's edits can and do become aware of other namespaces in which they can contribute. If you're a relative newcomer, your own distribution of edits is probably mostly in the main namespace. When you do an edit count on a long time experienced user, you see quite a few other namespaces. This creates exposure to those namespaces and can get people asking questions about how they can get their edit counts (read: contributions) in those areas.
- I think Kate's tool should continue to improve. For example, it could show how often, by percentage, the editor uses edit summaries, average # of edits per day overall and for contributing days, and more. I do think it is bad for people to become obsessed with edit counts. But, Kate's tool is about a LOT more than edit counts.

[edit] Six degrees of Wikipedia
It seems that counting wiki-links between articles is working only on en:Wiki. I've failed to persuade it to check link route between articles in bg:Wiki. I am right that as now the tool works only over English namespaces? Hi -- just one request, which is that you disambiguate (heh) on one of your tool's intermediate pages as to whether its present state is due to a technical problem or if you have decided to discontinue it or restrict its use. [edit] New counter
Kate, I've seen your new tool thingy, and just wanted to stop by to say its fab. You deserve a lot of thanks for putting in the work to develop and improve it. I'm aware that the (use of the) tool has come in for a lot of criticism; indeed, you have yourself had a few things to say about that, especially concerning its use on RFAs. I believe it's very valuable when used properly, ie. to give a quick idea of where an editor spends his time, and how experienced he is. But, for the quality and nature of an editor's work, the only measure is a look at the edits themselves, of course. That is to say, a good way to evaluate an editor = kate's tool + user contributions. My 2c. Anyway, thanks again—it's working great. encephalon 15:55, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

the counter should be working again, but the database is a little out of date (a day or two). it should be all back to normal shortly, with luck. kate.

[edit] Sorry to see you go
I just saw your edit to your user page, and wanted to let you know how saddened it makes me feel for someone as great as you to leave the project. Was it too much editcountitis? Trolls? Vandals? Edit warring? All I know is that Wikipedia has lost a great member of the community, and I will be sad to see you leave. Your tool, whose warning I try to adhear to very closely, has become a favorite of mine, and your programming skills are, in a word, amazing. I hope you don't mean that you're actually leaving forever, and will come back occasionally just to keep us in check. Anyways, good luck with your life outside of Wikipedia, and don't forget to visit. -Mysekurity e-mail 04:04, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
- i've been "gone" a while really, in reality... i just stayed behind because i find the technical side quite interesting. nowadays it's hard even to do that without being drawn into the community, and the state of the "community" (and i use that word in a very broad sense :) around Wikipedia makes me quite sad. i'm sure Wikipedia can manage without me... meanwhile i'll find some happier way to pass my time :) kate. (i'm sure i'll still be around here and there anyway, but i don't expect to participate to any great extent).
- I came over here all excited to say that the new counter is not only technically excellent, but beeooootiful—but now I'm sad to see that you're leaving (or, apparently, left). I'm sorry to see you go, kate. Thanks for everything, and all the best. encephalon 06:29, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Admin count script
please do not run this script again. i already firewalled several IPs making mass queries to the edit counter (presumably one was this script, which i did not know about at the time).
i'm sorry to be so harsh about this, but the edit counter is not intended for automated mass querying, and doing so uses server resources that could be better used for other projects. if you would like a list of administrators by edit count, it can be generated much more efficiently using an SQL query on the database. (let me know if you would like me to do this. bonus points if you supply the query as well :) kate. User:Kate
- If you're willing to update Wikipedia:List of administrators by edit count via SQL queries, please do! Isn't that what the edit counter does anyway, though? If not, it should be made more efficient. dbenbenn | talk 15:55, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
http://tools.wikimedia.de/~kate/files/admin-counts/, updated daily.
yes, the edit counter does this, but it also needs to serve the HTTP request and spawn a CGI (Python) process for every query. doing it with one is a little more efficient... kate.
- I just got a request to update the list again. The link you gave me hasn't been updated since December. Could you fix it, or set it to update again? (By the way, don't forget to change "FOOwiki" to "FOOwiki_p".) Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 15:38, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit counter suggestion: minor edits
Would it be possible to note the number and percentage of edits a user has marked as minor? I know this relies on an individual's interpretation of what is minor and what isn't, a user remembering to check/uncheck the box and doesn't take into account the effect a series of minor edtis can have (e.g. I've been doing a lot of recategorising on the commons and while the edits to each image are minor, the effect can be significant as a whole), etc. On top of that I cannot think of a use for it, beyond curiosity. So I will fully understand if you don't do this, but I thought I'd suggest it anyway. Thryduulf 00:19, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Editcountitis. You created it, yet you never contracted it yourself. Your countless attempts to stifle it proved futile. Now, you have fallen victim to its overwhelming unwikiness, which other users have imposed upon you. I do hope you come back. Really, I'd like to see some more edit counts! In any case, enjoy your vacation. --TantalumTelluride 05:58, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- I do not know what happened, but a large communiy appriciates your efforts, generally people forget to tell when something good is done. Well i dont, I thank you for the awsome tools you gave to us wikipedians. Editcountitism is a sideeffect of the tool when used improperly.

- Thank you for pointing out the obvious but there really is more at stake here than a tool. The tool can be replaced however the User:kate cannot. --Cool CatTalk|@ 15:34, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Is there some way we, the community, could help with this? Disks can be replaced, tools can be re-hosted on other servers, etc. Is it a matter of money, or logistics, or volunteer staff time, or what? MCB 01:26, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
- the problem is the bureaucracy of Wikimedia Deutschland, which needs to hold a meeting to vote on whether to purchase a new disk. it's not something the community (nor I) can help with, unfortunately. k.
- Ah, alas. I understand those sorts of things. I wish I had resources to contribute to that (like a disk array, a server to host it temporarily, or some €€€), but unfortunately not. MCB 06:55, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Kate counter is not working
Kate counter is not working at the Korean Wikipedia. According to a korean wikipedia admin, the server was moved from Florida to Korea. According to him, records show the counter [as working] before the move, whereas afterwards it [the counter] appears not to be reflected in the records. Please modify the program. --WonYong 08:32, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Free text searches
Wild cards does not work as they should. Searches on "undredal" [2] should be contained in "undre*l" [3] but I get an article about striptease which does not contain any words which should match this at all. It contains "undressed" and "undressing".
Sometimes it seems like matches in all name spaces does not add up to the total number of results [4]. In fact, selecting all name spaces sometimes sometimes changes the result, even lowering the number [5].
Also fuzzy matches does not work. I wonder if something grabs the tilde char and makes it apear as a regular character. I have no example as it seems like the searches are temporarilly down.
Some (all?) of the boolean operators must be written in upper case. I'm not sure if this really have any big impact but there should be on a help page somewhere.
For the time I'm mostly at the norwegian wikipedia no:Brukerdiskusjon:Agtfjott.

[edit] Edit counter
editcount is a great tool! When I used it today, I was expecting it to give graphs of the day and times I made my edits, but it just gave the summary statistics. Did I only dream that it did this last time I used it, am I mixing it up with something else, or has the functionality changed? Elroch 01:59, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
- There are two different edit counters, one by kate [6], and one by me [7]. I copied the initial look of Kate's, which is why they may look confusingly similar, but they have different features (mine is the one with more graphs, Kate's is more helpful if you misspell someone's username). --Interiot 02:39, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Greetings! Your talk page is getting a bit long in the tooth - please consider archiving your talk page (or ask me and I'll archive it for you). Cheers! BD2412 T 00:05, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
- No rule for talk pages, so far as I know, but there is a general preference that pages be kept short enough that they do not take an excessively long time to load on slow browsers. This is a problem easily addressed with talk pages - you can just archive all those discussions that do not require a response. Cheers! BD2412 T 21:01, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.
Where I read that quotation last, it was listed as apocrypha of Mark Twain. He was a public speaker, though, so it might just be that all the witnesses are dead, and he didn't say it in a courtroom. Maybe it doesn't matter. He was out of his field. Still, it's extremely hard to come up with a number for quality. It requires so much kaizen just to come up with an answer. What's the best answer? Maybe that really old guy down the street knows more about nutrition than you can keep in your stomach, because of what you don't know about nutrition.
Sometimes, the important thing is knowing what rules to ignore. Usually, it's the new ones. But, you've gotta be careful if you tread on rules that someone really wants you to attend to, just because she's in a foul mood. I hate that rule. Level heads rule. Revisionism is daynjerous. So is venjeance.
