Talk:Katsu (Zen)

[edit] What is shouted?
The DYK blurb on the main page seems to imply that "katsu" is not only the word describing a shout regarding enlightenment, but is also what is literally said during the shout itself. Is this the case (which, from the article, implies someone is shouting "SHOUT!"), or is something else (perhaps not specified) shouted when someone is katsu-ing? -- 21:44, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- What is literally said is "katsu" (in Japanese), or the different Chinese varieties of the word. And yes, literally what is being shouted is (more or less) the word "shout"—but, as the article points out, it is not really taken with such a literal, cut-and-dried meaning in the context of either Chan/Zen or the martial arts. Cheers. —Saposcat 21:51, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
