Talk:Kathleen Hanna

[edit] Early comments
This page has too much about Bikini Kill and not enough about Hanna. Does anyone have information on her fanzines like "April Fool's Day", her visual art and her acting work? I could use some references to some of her published work as well. I think Hanna should be considered more of a standalone feminist artist than just a member of several popular bands.
[edit] Kunsthaus
What on earth happened to the picture of mevrouw Hanna? Now it's all just text. Greatgavini 16:34, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
No idea. Feel free to add one. Maybe subheaders should be added to break up the block of text? Alicetiara 15:02, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Kathleen's birthdate
I've seen her birthdate listed as 1968, 1969 and 1970 on various Web sites, and a recent edit to her article changed the year from 1969 to 1968. In the July 23rd, 2005 entry on the Le Tigre diary, Kathleen quotes herself as saying "but I am 36 years old". From that I assume 1968 is correct, but does anyone have any other reference to her birthdate? dc 02:46, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Le Tigre
I'll change this once I get a reference, but it should be stated that the members of Le Tigre first started performing together as Julie Ruin, the live version of Kathleen Hanna's solo project of the same name. Also, saying that Le Tigre switched to Universal simply to spread their message further seems like an unrealistically generous statement. jh 10/2/06
[edit] Sexuality
There's nothing in the article about her being bisexual, and I've never heard of her dating anything other than men. Is there any info to back up the "bisexual" tag? Just because she supports LGBT rights and makes music with LGBT artists doesn't mean she is one. Trimp 01:15, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
look at her bikini kill lyrics a little closer youll figure it out
I think it's pretty naive to assume someone's sexual orientation because of song lyrics. Writers frequently use various literary devices when composing. Should we assume Kurt Cobain actually kept girls locked up in the basement ["Polly"]?? That being said I do think that Kathleen probably considers herself bisexual but I think NPOV requires some substantiation of this. Cursif 15:11, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
For the record, Kathleen has stated she considers herself bi, I'll get back to this when I find the article. Lipshipsrevolution 13:39, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

- In fact, she is TRI. She loves women, men and bisexual!
i know for a fact that she was dating a pineapple at some point. 24.34.199.86 (talk) 07:14, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] adam & kathleen married yet?
i've heard rumors that Kathleen & Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys) got married this year, can anyone confirm this? also i've noticed that Ad-Rock wears a ring that says "Kathleen" on it.
I have yet, personally, to find any reference to their marriage anywhere except here on Wikipedia and on Ask.com, which takes its information directly from Wikipedia. Can anyone find any real source that confirms Adam Horovitz and Kathleen Hanna did, indeed, get married in the summer of 2006? 72.186.143.34 08:30, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
it is in fact true that Adam & Kathleen are married, in a recent inteview he said he was married, so a confirmation.
[edit] photo
Is that photo even of her?--Jimmyjrg 12:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] wtf? re: photo
ok ummm not to diss but i liked the black & white photo of kathleen way better, also it was more recent too, shouldn't that photo of her in the bikini kill days go somewhere in the page not as the main pic?
[edit] the courtney love thingy
it's really super hard to find reliable info on anything related to kurt or courtney cos it's mostly all written by fanboys/girls who're either so in love w/ their memory of kurt that they can't see past their huge boner and see things objectively or people who think that courtney is this totally misunderstood riot grrrl icon, so i've tried to expand the courtney love thingy a little cos before it was just "was once punched by courtney love" so it made it sound like some stoopid "nya nya nyanny boo boo, courtney got you" thing, so having read courtney love's authorized biography to which she also contributed a lots to, i've tried to show a little more about what really happened. and i don't know how to add sources, so about the potentially controversial thing about how courtney shot up while pregnant, you can find that all over the place, including the infamous vanity fair article which you can either believe or not, or another msnbc article i found, or basically any interview with anyone who actually knew them during this time and didn't just masturbate to their records.
OMIGOD SHES A GENIE A PHILOSOPHER A MASTERPIECE WEARS A SCRUNCHIE I LOVE QUEEN KATHLEEN . HOW DID THE KING AD ROCK PULL MOLLY, IONE AND LE TIGRESSE ? AD ROCKS DOWN WITH JULIE RUIN TUNE INTO THE TUNE'S BOTH OF THEM ARE SPOONIN'?
why is her name stated as Hanna-Dando? is this in reference to her fan zine she did about Evan Dando of the Lemonheads???
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Riot Grrrl.jpg
Image:Riot Grrrl.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:03, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Sexuality redux
I've removed the "bisexual" category. While there's a ref provided - http://www.angelfire.com/mn/newpuritanreview/Archives/BikiniKill.html - it's to an interview hosted on angelfire, and the name of the periodical "New Puritan Review" only gets 8 google hits, so I can't tell how reliable a source it is. I've also seen the bisexual label put on her on glbtq.com - see http://www.glbtq.com/arts/rock_music,3.html - but that's in passing, so I don't know how reliable *it* is, either. And finally, the St. Petersburg Times says she's straight - see the citation in the article. So, unless there's a better ref someplace, I've taken off the category. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:12, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

- St P. Times is the least reliable of all. That article does not say what the basis for the identification is (was it simply applied by the journalist because she has a b/f?). Citing it as a source simply pushes back the need for a 'source' further. An actual interview is reliable - unless one thinks it is invented. (Any reason to think so?) And the fact of her sexuality is hardly a secret - even though she may avoid the label. NIghtjar 17:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

- Per WP:BLP, there's gotta be a reliably sourced reference. If she avoids it, we can't label her. StP Times may not be reliable either, but an interview published on Angelfire from a periodical that doesn't have a website, doesn't show up on Google Scholar or Google News, and only has 11 hits on a regular Google search [1] doesn't sound any more reliable. Can't we find something better that states her sexuality? -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 17:30, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Atheism, etc
I've removed a couple recent edits and wanted to put my reasons here, though please re-add if you think they don't suffice:
- Atheism: First, the source given is a wiki, and therefore not a reliable source by Wikipedia's definition. Second, I'm not all that sure it's relevant, though that's pretty much my opinion, so if an RS can be found, put it back if you want.
- Teen Spirit: Legend or whatever - IMDB is also not a reliable source. This smacks of trivia and urban legend, so please find a good source if you want to include the info.
- Stripper: This is controversial information that has to have a reliable source. Everything2.com totally doesn't make the grade.
Thanks, -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 07:19, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for giving me the reasons and I understand. I will do some more research for RS. --Grrrlriot (talk) 18:16, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Quotes
The list of quotations is inappropriate (see WP:NOTDIR). It is basically not substantially different (in terms of encyclopedic relevance) from a Trivia section. Truly important quotes should be integrated into the text of other sections and the remaining quotes should be deleted. If it were up to me, I'd just delete the entire Quotes section, but that's sufficiently drastic that it seems worthwhile to say something here first and discuss if necessary.
