Can I just ask - why do so many people make jokes at Ms. Orman's expense? Is it because of something she did? Is she not a nice woman? SOMEONE, PLEASE TELL ME WHYYYYYYY!!!! NP Chilla 22:19, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

I only met Kate once or twice years ago before her first novel was published, but we have a friend in common and I've kept abreast of her career. Certainly felt she was a nice person.

Speaking from my outside vantage point, Kate stood out in the tight-knit Aussie DW community where everyone knows everyone else (much smaller than in the UK and US). At the time I met her there were very few women participating in the fandom over there, but Kate was one of the first, along with other fan writers like Sarah Groenewegen, Liz Elwell (who now runs Coteandcutler.com) and Susannah Tiller.

She's strong-minded, and feminist, takes herself seriously - therefore some of the guys disrespect her, or maybe they're intimidated by her and can only relate by making fun of her. So I'd always question whether the people making jokes about her can write their way out of a paper bag. Besides, it's a bit dodgy for her to be made fun of by fellow fans considering the heights of "anorak"-dom some reach. (But then, I don't like Paul Cornell's writing at all, so what do I know??)

Anyway, I think if she were working in a different fandom, she'd be viewed with the value she deserves a la Jean Lorrah or Jacqueline Lichtenberg (who inspired Ron Moore, by the way). Noirdame 10:43, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
