As of 2001 India census,[2] Katras had a population of 51,182. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Katras has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 58%. In Katras, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Katras is place where people from various religions and communities live together happily. It is known for its Durga puja celebration more famous as "Rani Bajar".It is a place beside the Damodar River, and sourounded surrounded by coal mines. It has an important railway station and One of the most wonderful fact about Katras is that, you can find each and every facility of life within a very small area.Many Schools are also there out of which the most famous is 'Holy Mother's Academy' and 'DAV BARORA'and "DE NOBILI". Here Hanuman Mansion, Tribhuwan complex, Khaitan Tower are the famous market complexes. There are many movie theaters. Katras is an hour drive from Dhanbad city. Katras has a numerous hospitals and nursing homes which provide help and aid to people all round the clock.It has an important railway station and is besides the Damodar river.
Katras has many shopping places. It is very great place to be. It is also known for one of its oldest temple called Liloristan, which is considered a very sacred place for hindus for the worship of "MAA KAALI".THE NEAR BY PLACES ARE RICH SOURCES OF COAL like SINIDIH,MADHUBAN,GOVINDPUR ,BARORA.
