It will also air on Global in Canada;[1] the premiere dates in other parts of the world are not yet announced. [edit] Details
Prior to being adapted to an American version, the original version had already aired in the United States, where its first two seasons was airing on Trio in 2004. After Trio folded it moved over to the Sundance Channel in early 2006, where it did well.
On November 9, 2006, NBC announced a U.S. version of Kath & Kim. A pilot episode was produced by Reveille (the same studio that adapted Ugly Betty and The Office into U.S. hits) and NBC Universal[2], with Riley and Turner serving as executive producers and consultants.
Originally, NBC decided not to place it on the 2007-2008 fall television season[3], but after the network named Reveille founder Ben Silverman its new entertainment head, Silverman, who had been trying to bring this adaptation to American screens since 2004[4], went ahead and had the project greenlighted. On April 8, 2008, NBC announced that the series will air on Tuesday nights in the first phase of the network's fall schedule. [5]. Then on May 23rd, 2008, NBC released a press release saying it has moved to Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c following The Office starting October 9th, 2008.
NBC has confirmed that actress Molly Shannon was recently cast in the role of Kath[6], and Selma Blair in the role of Kim.[7] It should be noted that even though they are playing mother and daughter, both Shannon and Blair's ages are actually eight years apart (Shannon was born in 1964; Blair in 1972. However, this ties in with the Australian version, as Jane Turner and Gina Riley are in fact the same age).
In the US version the names of the supporting characters have been changed. While Kath and Kim will retain their first names (although both will have same last name, Day, for this version), the three other characters will have different first names for the American audience: Heather (replacing Sharon), Craig (replacing Brett) and Phil (replacing Kel)[8]
NBC has picked Paul Feig to direct the pilot episode of Kath & Kim.[9] On April 10, 2008, the Hollywood Reporter announced that John Michael Higgins and Mikey Day had been cast as Kath & Kim's significant others. [10]
The show was ordered to series in early 2008.[11] The first season will initially consist of six episodes that are scheduled to start production immediately now that the Writers Guild of America strike is resolved.
