[edit] Early life
She grew up in Sea Cliff, New York. She has a sister, Emily Berthold. Their father passed away from brain cancer when Kate was in her late teens[1].
[edit] Career
Kate McKinnon appeared in the 1986 film, Wisdom, playing Nancy Allenford. She graduated from Columbia University in 2006 with a B.A. in theater. She credits her career and success in comedy to the Varisty Show that was put on at her college. As an out lesbian,[2] she is currently a cast member of The Big Gay Sketch Show on the Logo Network. Her favorite character to play[3] on TBGSS is Fitzwilliam, the transgender boy from Switchinghamshire. She also plays Rachael Ray, Heidi Klum, the cello-playing half of the folk duo "Sappho's Lips" on the show, and many other characters. She and Julie Goldman regularly post a video blog called "Kate and Julie's Big Gay Vlog" which is featured on the lesbian pop culture website AfterEllen.com. Kate also joined Goldman in Celebian Interviews. They have a wildly popular video on You Tube called "Commitment Ceremony" about two women who want to spend their lives together. Outside of her cast mates on The Big Gay Sketch Show (also the Big STRAIGHT Sketch Show, which pokes fun at 'straight' sketch comedy), she has worked with celebrities such as Rosie O'Donnell, Rebecca Drysdale, and Amanda Bearse. McKinnon writes and performs solo comedy, as well as stand-up around New York. As a musician, she plays the piano, guitar, and cello.
