Kate Garner

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kate Garner (born 9 July 1954, Wigan, Lancashire) is an English singer and photographer. Garner was one third of the trio of 1980s avant-garde, new wave pop project called Haysi Fantayzee, the other members being Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin. Their music combined reggae, country and electro with political and sociological lyrics couched as nursery rhymes.

Haysi Fantayzee combined their extreme clothes sense, described as "rasta meets hillbilly meets Dickens character meets pearly king and queen" with a quirky musical sound comparable to other new wave musical pop acts of the era, such as Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants, Culture Club and Bananarama. They appeared several times on the popular BBC programme Top of The Pops. However, the group quickly disbanded after releasing two hit singles "John Wayne Is Big Leggy" and "Shiny Shiny", and an album that went gold. Garner then launched a successful photographic career in Los Angeles, California; working over a period of time with Sinéad O'Connor, creating many memorable images of her including her 1987 debut The Lion and the Cobra. Garner has also photographed many musicians and celebrities. Among them are: David Bowie, Eazy E, Dr Dre, Leigh Bowery, JT Leroy, Angelina Jolie, David Bowie, Cameron Diaz, PJ Harvey, John Galliano, Björk, Kate Moss, and numerous others. Her work has appeared in American Vogue, English Vogue, Harpers Bazaar etc. She is a continuing contributor to i-D magazine.

She had her first exhibition in February 2007 at the Painter's Gallery on Charing Cross Road, London and her current work on IDENTITY ARTISTS can be seen at http://www.varnishfineart.com/artist/kategarner.

She recently formed an artware company with interior designer and hotelier Marchella De Angelis. http://www.thecoolhunter.net/travel/Cotswolds88-Hotel-Cotswold-UK-/. The company's policy is to juxtapose the eccentric with the everyday to produce a homeware range that inspires individualistic expression. Their wallpaper is archived at the V&A

Kate continues to perform with her husband, Emit Bloch and lives with Emit and their daughter Grace in London.
