KASC (1260 AM, "The Blaze 1260 AM") is an unlicensed radio station operated by students at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and is a part of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication[1]. The station broadcasts local and national music, as well as newscasts and sports coverage. The station operates in a building between the Architecture Library and Drama Theater at the Arizona State University's Tempe Campus.

KASC was founded in 1982, then using the call sign KASR, using carrier current broadcast only. While it remains an unlicensed station, KASC now broadcasts 24 hours a day using a 30-watt transmitter (operating at seven watts) as well as via a streaming audio feed at their website. The station can be heard in most of the East Valley area of Phoenix, but the signal is very weak and laden with static noise, rendering the music almost inaudible. However, the station has been broadcasting online, in addition to its AM signal, since 1999.

[edit] Programming

[edit] Music

The Blaze's Music Department is currently overseen by Becky Bartkowski, a sophomore at ASU. Bartkowski has initiated a program where disc jockeys play on an alternative format around the clock. She is also the host of "The Finger", a music talk show with former Music Director Wasef El-Kharouf and Laura Wachel, and "Wrapped in Plastic", a show that prides itself on playing music for the very first time on The Blaze.

Two music programs on the Blaze have been running for several years now on the station. They are "The Flipside of Jazz" with station legend Sander Alisky, and "The Maple Minutes" with station advisor Leah Miller Collins. "The Maple Minutes", a show chronicling Canadian music recently opened up a MySpace page for the dedicated fans of the program.[2]

Another entertaining program formerly on the station was on Sunday nights, known as "The Scott Menor Show" and often guest co-hosted by a caller known as E-Money.[3] The show was hosted by Scott Menor, who had a deep voice and was relatively serious, and caller and unofficial cohost E-Money, who talked much faster and was more excitable. When E-Money would call in, the show was basically Scott and E-Money talking to each other between songs. Frequently E-Money would drop in sound effects to attempt to make the show more entertaining. He would also frequently complain about his life, argue with Scott, or try to dominate the show. Scott also had many bands in-studio, such as "Niki Kwik", "Seventy Five Summers", and "Rajiv Patel". When bands were in-studio, E-Money would generally not call in and it would just be Scott and the band members on the show.

Scott also hosted a talk show on Monday nights, where he would discuss different majors with members of the faculty and students at ASU. E-Money would generally not call in to that show, but he did once and played a game taken from Loveline known as "Germany or Florida", with Scott and the philosophy student guests.

Other shows in the music department include "Metal Mania", "The Basement", "Hip Hop 101", "Point of Ventre", "Code Blue", and "The Ben Benya Radio Show", a classic rock anthology program.

[edit] Sports

The Blaze Sports Department is currently run by sports director Ben Benya, a junior at Arizona State. His assistant sports directors are fellow students Adam Ostrow and Justin Ienuso. Sports programming operates everyday with live updates from around the world at the bottom of every hour, as well as in-depth coverage and analysis of ASU football, men's and women's basketball, men's baseball, and women's softball.

The Sports Department is also home to a number of sports talk shows, including the nightly program "Bottom of the 6th", which is hosted by two different department volunteers each night from Monday to Thursday. "Bottom of the 6th" is a half-hour show featuring discussion and banter regarding ASU Sports as well as professional athletics from around the globe. "The 7 O'Clock Stretch" is another popular sports talk show that operates on a different format and touches on any and all topics in the world of sports.

There is also the returning "Devil's Dugout", a show dedicated to ASU Baseball coverage.

[edit] News

As of March 17, 2008, The News Department of KASC is run by Briana Valdivia, a sophomore at ASU and Peer Mentor in the Cronkite Village Living Learning Community. Briana takes over for the previous News Director Eric Fink. News stories are covered on the Blaze everyday with updates at the top of every hour and a daily half-hour news reporting program, "Press Pass". Anchors on "Press Pass" follow a strict format of international news, followed by national and local news with business, entertainment, traffic, weather, and sports integrated throughout the show. Currently, "Press Pass" runs Monday through Thursday on the Blaze.

The News Department is also home to "Firestorm," a one-hour political discussion show on Wednesday nights. The anchors of this show, an even balance of liberal and conservative correspondents, debate large political topics of the day that range from local issues to global concerns. The show also has a rapid-fire, lightning round ending entitled Short Fuse, where topics are fast and furious and answers are often satirical in nature. An official Firestorm website has been launched with archived episodes.[4]
