Karunya University (formerly Karunya Institute of Technology & Sciences) is a fully residential pro-Christian private university located in Coimbatore, India. It was founded as a Christian minority institution by Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran, his son Dr. Paul Dhinakaran, Christian evangelists and founders of Jesus Calls Ministries, India.

In the year 1981, Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran, believing that he received a divine commission, embarked on the path to start a Technical University which could turn out outstanding engineers with leadership qualities at the national, global level. The institute was inaugurated on 4 October 1986 A.D. as Karunya Institute of Technology by Arjun Singh, the Human Resources and Development (HRD) minister in the current Indian government. The institute was then affiliated to Bharathiar University in Coimbatore and functioned as a private self-financing engineering college. It was promoted by the Karunya Educational Trust. In 2004, the institute was awarded the deemed university status in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India and subsequently renamed as Karunya University under sec. 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. 9-3-2000-U3 dt. 23.6.2004 of the Government of India.[1].
The Founder chancellor Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran passed away and went to be with the LORD on 20.02.2008.

To provide the youth with the best opportunities and environment for higher education and research in Sciences and Technology and enable them to attain very high levels of academic excellence as well as scientific, technical and professional competency.
To train and develop students to be good and able citizens capable of making significant contribution towards meeting the developmental needs and priorities of the nation.
To inculcate in students moral values and leadership qualities to make them appreciate the need for high ethical standards in personal, social and public life and reach the highest level of humanism, such that they shall always uphold and promote a high social order and be ready and willing to work for the emancipation of the poor, the needy and the under-privileged.

The Siruvani reservoir, which supplies water to Coimbatore City, is about 11 km further up in the hills on the Kerala side. Just 2 km away from the campus on three sides are the Tamil Nadu reserve forests. The famous Kovai Kurtallam falls is located 2 km in side this forest and is accessible by motor road.

Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran (late) is the Founder Chancellor, and Dr. Paul Dhinakaran is the Chancellor of Karunya University . Dr. Paul P. Appasamy is the Vice-Chancellor and Dr.(Mrs)Anne Mary Fernandez is the Registrar.
